Assistant Professor in Game Design
At Uppsala University and the Department of Game Design, researchers with backgrounds in humanities, social sciences, engineering, natural sciences, and medicine work in close collaboration with teachers who have experience in game design, development, and production. These diverse areas of expertise are united by a common interest in establishing game design as an independent field of research and education.
Evaluation Criteria
In the selection among qualified applicants, particular emphasis will be placed on both scientific and pedagogical proficiency. Scientific and pedagogical proficiency will be given equal weight. Leadership and administrative skills will also be assessed.
Scientific Proficiency refers to research merits. In assessing scientific proficiency, scientific quality will be the primary focus. Merits and experience in research related to game design and/or one of the department's profile areas (graphics, game programming, project management, and level design) will be prioritized. Knowledge and experience in quantitative and/or qualitative methods, empirical research design, experimental methods, combined with solid fundamental knowledge in statistical analysis, will be prioritized. Special emphasis will be placed on documented experience of publishing in international, peer-reviewed journals, as well as demonstrated ability to obtain external research funding in competitive calls. Great importance will be attached to experience in leading and/or participating in interdisciplinary research and collaboration projects, as well as documented ability to collaborate with researchers from fields other than one's own.
Pedagogical Proficiency refers to qualifications in education and teaching. In addition to academic merits, pedagogical qualifications from other activities, such as supervision, internal training, or mentorship programs, may be considered. In assessing pedagogical competence, pedagogical quality should be given the highest priority. The scope, both in terms of breadth and depth, should also be taken into account. In the assessment of pedagogical skills, special emphasis will be placed on experience in teaching game design and one of the department's profile areas (graphics, game programming, project management, and level design). Supervision of master's and bachelor's students is also considered a merit.
Administrative Skills refer to leadership and collaboration abilities and will be given great importance. Administrative skills are demonstrated, among other things, by the ability to plan, organize, and prioritize work in an effective and goal-oriented manner, as well as by the ability to set and adhere to timeframes. These skills encompass overall operational planning and the ability to manage resources in a way that reflects the organization's priorities, as well as the ability to work in a structured manner with awareness of goals and quality. Great importance will be attached to candidates who demonstrate the ability to lead working groups, handle course administration, maintain strict project timelines, and contribute to the positive development of the operations.

About the Position
The position of Assistant Professor may be held for a maximum of four years, with the possibility of being reviewed for promotion to Associate Professor. The Assistant Professor is expected to apply for promotion to Associate Professor towards the end of the four-year period. Criteria for promotion to Associate Professor can be found in Uppsala University's employment regulations and the Faculty of Humanities and Theology's supplementary guidelines to the employment regulations.
