Subject/Discipline Description

Responsibilities

The duties consist of research, teaching, course development, supervision, and examination at various levels in linguistics, primarily within computational linguistics, but also other suitable teaching within the department's existing course offerings. The curriculum includes courses in computer systems, programming and machine learning, speech analysis, mathematics, statistics, corpus linguistics, language technology, thesis and project work, semantics, as well as an introductory course in linguistics. The computational linguistics courses are offered at both bachelor's and master's levels. The role of Assistant Professor also includes participating in scientific, pedagogical, and administrative development work, actively engaging in the department's research environment, and conducting independent research.

Qualifications

To be eligible for appointment as an Assistant Professor in Computational Linguistics, the candidate must have completed a relevant doctoral degree (e.g., in linguistics, computational linguistics, language technology, or computer science), or have a foreign degree assessed as equivalent to a doctoral degree. The candidate must have documented scientific competence in computational linguistics, machine learning, and large language models (LLM), as well as documented pedagogical proficiency. General eligibility requirements include the ability to collaborate and the overall aptitude and suitability needed to perform the duties effectively.

Evaluation Criteria

In the selection among eligible applicants, particular and equal weight will be given to pedagogical and scientific proficiency in linguistics with a focus on computational linguistics, machine learning, and large language models. Significant weight will also be placed on the breadth of these competencies. The breadth of pedagogical proficiency refers to the ability to teach within the subjects of the department's course offerings. The breadth of scientific proficiency refers to the ability to drive interdisciplinary research projects, in line with other research conducted at the department.

Stockholm University will, in this recruitment, primarily consider the candidate who, after a holistic assessment of competence, merits, skills, and personal abilities, has the best prerequisites to perform the current duties and contribute to a positive development of the operations.

Highly Meritorious Qualifications include:

  • documented ability to teach a course offering relevant to the department,
  • experience in applying for and obtaining external research funding,
  • experience in research and teaching in language technology and machine learning, including large language models.

Meritorious Qualifications include:

  • ability to collaborate with the surrounding society and to inform about research and development work,
  • documented ability for interdisciplinary collaboration, preferably within one of the areas where research is conducted at the department,
  • supervision at the doctoral level,
  • documented administrative proficiency,
  • skills in Swedish (or Norwegian or Danish) required for collaboration within the department, faculty, university, and society at large, in accordance with the description above of main duties.

University Teaching Education

University teaching education of at least 15 higher education credits or equivalent knowledge acquired in other ways is meritorious. Completion of doctoral supervisor training is also meritorious.

About the Position

The appointment of Assistant Professor is part of the university's career path ("tenure track") and is regulated by the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100).

For this appointment, the Assistant Professor is appointed on a permanent basis, for a maximum of 4 years. The appointment can be extended by a maximum of two years if there are special reasons. Special reasons may include, for example, sick leave or parental leave.

After application and review, the Assistant Professor may be promoted to a permanent appointment as Associate Professor. Specific criteria for promotion from Assistant Professor to Associate Professor have been established by the Area Board for Humanities.

An application for promotion must be submitted to the faculty no later than nine months before the term as Assistant Professor expires.

Other Information

Swedish language proficiency is not a requirement for the appointment, but the applicant must be prepared to, within a couple of years if necessary, take on administrative and pedagogical duties that require understanding and use of Swedish.
