The Department of Molecular Biosciences, Wenner-Gren Institute (MBW) conducts experimental basic research in molecular cell biology, integrative biology, and infection and immunobiology. The research environment is characterized by modern and advanced methodology and has a strong international profile. MBW is one of the larger departments within the Faculty of Science at Stockholm University, with over 30 research groups and approximately 180 employees, including 65 doctoral students. More information about us can be found at: Department of Molecular Biosciences, Wenner-Gren Institute (#).
Project Description
The doctoral student's dissertation work will be carried out within the framework of Professor Martin Jastroch's research group. The project addresses molecular mechanisms of energy metabolism, particularly those related to obesity, metabolic diseases, or evolution. We use animal models (mice, marsupials) and cellular models (adipocytes) to understand the underlying mechanisms in the development of metabolic dysfunctions, evaluated through mouse metabolic phenotyping, bioenergetic, and molecular analyses. The project will also involve handling large amounts of data from omics methods, and basic computational and programming skills will be necessary.
Qualifications
To be admitted to doctoral studies, the applicant must have basic and specific eligibility. Eligibility must be met by the last day of application.
Basic Eligibility is met if you have completed an advanced level degree, or completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits (HEC), of which at least 60 HEC at advanced level, or in some other way within or outside the country have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge.
Specific Eligibility is described in the general syllabus for doctoral studies in the subject. Doctoral studies in the subject of energy metabolism stipulate that applicants must obtain a FELASA certificate to work with laboratory mice and be familiar with at least the cultivation of adipocytes at the start. The applicant should have knowledge of basic molecular methods, and experience with cellular respirometry is meritorious.
Selection
Selection among applicants is made with regard to the ability to benefit from doctoral education. Criteria used to assess this ability are:
Admission regulations for doctoral studies at Stockholm University.
