Responsibilities

Vehicle Technology and Technical Acoustics at KTH is seeking a postdoctoral researcher for the VR-funded research project SMILE (Soundscape engineering with Metamaterial Innovation and LEarning). SMILE develops methods for acoustic design that combine soundscape goals, acoustic metamaterials, physical modeling, inverse design, machine learning, and perceptual evaluation.

The postdoctoral researcher will develop models and design methods for acoustic metamaterials/metamaterial surfaces, utilize simulation and data-driven optimization, contribute to listening tests and VR-based soundscape evaluations, build or test prototypes, publish results, and contribute to coordination and supervision. Teaching duties may be included, but will not exceed 20 percent of the working time.

Qualifications

Requirements

  • A completed PhD degree or a foreign degree assessed as equivalent to a PhD. This eligibility requirement must be met no later than the time the employment decision is made.
  • Scientific proficiency in soundscapes, psychoacoustics, environmental acoustics, technical acoustics, acoustic design, or a related field.
  • Documented experience with soundscape-related research methods, such as prediction, design, or evaluation of soundscapes; psychoacoustic or perceptual modeling; auralization; listening tests; VR-based or other human-subject experiments; or analysis of urban, indoor, or vehicle-related sound environments.
  • Excellent ability to write scientific texts and communicate in English. English is required as the project is international and results are to be disseminated internationally.
  • Good collaborative skills, independence, responsibility, and awareness of diversity and equal opportunity issues, with a particular focus on gender equality.

Merits

  • PhD degree or a foreign degree assessed as equivalent to a PhD awarded no more than three years prior to the application deadline.
  • A strong publication record in a field relevant to the position.
  • Experience in soundscape prediction, soundscape design, soundscape evaluation, psychoacoustics, auralization, or related perceptual modeling.
  • Experience in designing, conducting, or analyzing VR-based soundscape experiments, listening tests, or other human-subject experiments.
  • Experience with acoustic metamaterials/metamaterial surfaces, such as design, modeling, manufacturing, prototype development, measurements, or experimental validation.
  • Additional merits include experience in machine learning, optimization, signal processing, numerical acoustic simulation (e.g., FEM/BEM/SEA), and programming or data analysis in Python, MATLAB, Julia, or similar tools.

We will place great emphasis on personal qualities.
