We draw strength from over 50,000 students and employees. Students who give hope for the future. Employees who every day contribute to Linköping University tackling today's challenges. Our core values are built on credibility, trust, and security. By being bold, thinking freely, and innovating, we create a better future together through both large and small actions. We welcome you to apply for a job with us!
Your responsibilities
Research on first-principles modeling of point defects in semiconductor materials, with a particular focus on realistic and complex environments. The systems studied include alloyed, disordered, and finite-temperature materials. Quantum mechanical methods combined with machine learning-based methods will be used. As a doctoral student, you will focus on your doctoral studies and the research project you are part of. Your work may also include teaching or participating in other departmental duties, up to 20% of full-time.
Your qualifications
You have completed an advanced level degree (Master's level) or finished courses totaling at least 240 higher education credits, with at least 60 credits at an advanced level, in applied physics, theoretical physics, or related fields, or have acquired equivalent knowledge in another way.
Very good knowledge of quantum mechanics, statistical physics, and computational physics is required. Knowledge in thermodynamics, programming, and scientific computing is meritorious. Previous experience with first-principles methods for electronic structure, defect physics in semiconductors, and/or machine learning applied to physical systems is considered a strong asset. Only persons who are or have been admitted to doctoral studies are eligible for the doctoral position.
Good programming skills (e.g., Python, Fortran, or C/C++) and experience with high-performance computing (HPC) are desirable. Very good ability to express yourself orally and in written English is required, as English is the working language of the research group.
The successful candidate is expected to be independent, curious, and well-organized, with a strong interest in fundamental physical understanding as well as computational methodology. Good teamwork skills and the ability to communicate effectively in an international research environment are of great importance.
Your workplace
Your research area is theoretical physics, and the research will be conducted at the Division of Theoretical Physics at the Department of Physics, Chemistry and Biology (IFM), Linköping University. The Division of Theoretical Physics conducts research and provides undergraduate and doctoral education in theoretical physics, with activities covering electronic structure theory, materials modeling, and computational condensed matter physics.
The position is located within the research unit Ab Initio Theory and Energy Materials (TEAM), which develops and applies first-principles methods and machine learning methods to understand the properties of functional materials, including semiconductors and energy materials.
About the position
Upon starting employment, you will be admitted to the doctoral studies. Read more about the doctoral education at each faculty: https://liu.se/forskning/forskarutbildning (https://liu.se/forskning/forskarutbildning)
The employment is fixed-term for four years full-time. You will initially be employed for one year, after which the employment will be renewed for up to two years at a time, based on the achieved study plan. Extension of employment up to five years occurs based on the extent of teaching and departmental duties. Further extension may occur under special circumstances.
Start date by agreement.
