The Department of Ethnology, Religious History and Gender Studies (ERG) has approximately 60 employees, of whom about 16 are ethnologists. We conduct research on expressive forms, the use of history, natural and cultural heritage, health, diversity, and transnational mobility. We are now looking for a PhD student in ethnology.
More information about us can be found at: The Department of Ethnology, Religious History and Gender Studies (ERG) (#).
PhD Programme
PhD students in ethnology are part of an educational collaboration with five other Swedish universities as well as Åbo Akademi. They also have the opportunity to participate in courses offered by the Faculty of Humanities' doctoral school.
Admission Requirements
To be admitted to doctoral studies, the applicant must have basic and specific eligibility. Eligibility must be fulfilled by the last day of application.
You have basic eligibility if you have completed an advanced level degree, or completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits (HEC), of which at least 60 HEC at advanced level, or have otherwise acquired substantially equivalent knowledge within or outside the country.
Specific eligibility is described in the General Study Plan for Doctoral Studies in Ethnology. It requires that you have successfully completed advanced level courses of at least 30 HEC in ethnology, including a thesis of at least 15 HEC. Additionally, specific eligibility requires that the applicant masters either Swedish, Danish, or Norwegian, as well as English. The language skills must include the ability to read, speak, and write in the respective languages. Exceptions may be granted only to applicants who cannot write in Swedish, Danish, or Norwegian but can read and speak one of these languages.
The eligibility requirements can also be met by those who have acquired substantially equivalent competence within or outside the country.
Selection
The selection among applicants is made with regard to the ability to benefit from doctoral education. The criteria used according to the general study plan to assess this ability are as follows:
- Previous education in general. Assessment takes into account both the depth and breadth of previous education.
- Previous scientific production. Based on theses from basic and advanced levels, and in some cases other written scientific production, the applicant's ability to benefit from the education is assessed. The time aspect is also considered; i.e., to what extent the applicant has shown the ability to complete previous scientific tasks within given timeframes. Furthermore, based on a comparison of scientific outputs, an assessment is made of the applicant's scientific development. The scientific production is assessed regarding critical ability, analytical ability, independence, and creativity.
- Research plan. In connection with the application, the applicant should briefly outline their intended research area. The outline should contain problem formulation(s) and a sketch of the implementation of the research work. The plan is assessed regarding relevance, originality, and feasibility within a given timeframe (i.e., during a period equivalent to four years of full-time study).
- Available supervisor competence.
- Collaboration skills. The applicant's ability to collaborate is assessed based on references, certificates, or interviews.
