The Department of Process and Biotechnology (PLE) at Lund University is located at Kemicentrum, one of the largest centers in the Nordics for education and research in the field of chemistry. PLE has approximately 150 employees, of whom about 65 are PhD students. The department offers broad expertise in areas such as chemical engineering, food technology, biotechnology, and technical microbiology. Research and education at PLE span the entire field of chemistry and include both undergraduate and graduate education.

Description of the workplace

The position is located at the Division of Biotechnology and Technical Microbiology (BAM), Department of Process and Biotechnology (PLE) at Kemicentrum in Lund. The division conducts research and education at the undergraduate and PhD levels in various areas of biotechnology. One of the key areas is industrial biotechnology, which involves the development of biological catalysts and sustainable processes for bio-based chemicals, bioenergy, and food. The division is highly international and strives to maintain a balanced gender distribution.

Job Description

The position as Project Assistant involves participation in the EU-Horizon research project UPCYCLE and includes active participation in the development of biocatalysts and a lab-scale bioprocess for the synthesis of building blocks for renewable and recyclable plastic.

The duties include:

  • Laboratory work
    • Gene cloning using the CRISPR-Cas9 method and protein expression.
    • Adaptive evolution of microbes against furans.
    • Analyze biosynthetic activity of evolved microbial cells.
  • Product and data analysis.
  • Preparation of a manuscript for publication.
  • Oral presentations within the research group and for project partners.

Qualifications

The following qualifications are required for the position:

  • A completed Master's degree in biotechnology or another relevant field.
  • Theoretical and practical competence in molecular biotechnology, bioinformatics, microbial processes, biocatalysis, and programming with Python/R.
  • Practical experience with bacterial cultivation, genetic engineering methods, biological conversion, and analytical methods such as spectrophotometry and chromatographic techniques.
  • Very good knowledge of English, both spoken and written.

The following qualifications are meritorious:

  • Practical experience with CRISPR-Cas and adaptive evolution techniques.
  • Experience in analyzing gene sequences.
  • Experience in conducting risk assessments.
  • Good teamwork skills, drive, and independence.
  • Skilled in planning, execution, and accurate documentation of experimental workflows.
  • Very good communication skills through oral presentations and written reports.

The employment is a fixed-term appointment for the period 2026-08-17 to 2027-03-16 with a scope of 100%.
