Workplace Description

The Language and Literature Center conducts both research and teaching in the subject of Yiddish.

We offer teaching in Yiddish from beginner level up to and including bachelor's level. Additionally, a couple of introductory literature and culture courses in the subject of Yiddish are offered at both undergraduate and advanced levels. The department where the subject of Yiddish is located also conducts language instruction in Hebrew, Arabic, Middle Eastern studies, and mother tongue education.

Job Responsibilities and Areas of Responsibility

You will have particular responsibility for working with cultural heritage in a broad sense, primarily within Yiddish. As part of your duties, you will:

• Review and analyze existing collections of literature and multimedia related to Yiddish culture and the Yiddish language at Lund University and public libraries; thus literature primarily in the languages Yiddish and Hebrew but also other relevant languages (German and Arabic may occur) as needed,
• Work with the metadata in bibliographic records about and in Yiddish and Hebrew,
• Inventory and identify needs for new acquisitions in Yiddish and Jewish life,
• Support subject librarians for Yiddish, Hebrew, Jewish studies, and related subjects
• In collaboration with the program director and teachers in Yiddish, work with Jewish interest organizations on activities related to Yiddish literature and Yiddish culture and the revitalization of the Yiddish language.

Qualifications

The requirements for the position are:

• Good ability to read in Yiddish,
• Very good knowledge of Jewish life and cultural heritage,
• Previous experience working with transcription and metadata in bibliographic records,
• Master's degree in a relevant field for the position,
• Good ability to communicate in spoken and written English.

Desirable qualifications for the position include:

• Knowledge of Hebrew,
• Knowledge of other relevant languages and scripts for the tasks such as German, Ladino, and Arabic.

This is a project employment as a project coordinator in Yiddish. The position is a project employment with a scope of 40%. The employment period is from February 15, 2026, to September 15, 2026.

The vacation accrued during the employment must be taken during the employment period.

About the Language and Literature Center

The Language and Literature Center (SOL) is Sweden's largest institution focusing on languages, linguistics, literary studies, and area studies. SOL offers about 500 independent courses complemented by a growing number of program courses at both undergraduate and advanced levels. With its 36 subjects and about 30 doctoral programs, SOL forms a solid unit with breadth and depth in education and research and is characterized by both national and international visibility.
