Uppsala University hereby announces a vacancy for the position of

Assistant Professor in Media and Communication Studies

at the Department of Informatics and Media and the Institute for Russian and Eurasian Studies

The Department of Informatics and Media (IM) brings together researchers in three subject areas: media and communication studies, information systems, and human-computer interaction. The research profile within the media and communication studies subject is broad and covers issues related to digitalization, discourse studies, the role of the media in society, and organizational communication. The department also has a comprehensive teaching mandate for degree programs and standalone courses within the Faculty of Social Sciences.

The Institute for Russian and Eurasian Studies (IRES) is part of the Faculty of Social Sciences at Uppsala University. IRES has a widely recognized, integrated, multidisciplinary long-term research program with a deep focus on the latest developments in Russia and the broader post-Soviet sphere. We also analyze more specific themes such as security and insecurity, decolonization, illiberalism, resource conflicts, and the interaction between humans and nature.

Employment Period

The position of Assistant Professor may be held for a maximum of four years, with the possibility of promotion to Associate Professor. An employee in the position of Assistant Professor shall, upon written application, be promoted to Associate Professor if, after expert review, they are assessed to meet the qualification requirements established by the respective subject or faculty board, as stated in the job advertisement. Other criteria for promotion to Associate Professor are found in the Employment Regulations of Uppsala University and in the supplementary guidelines of the Faculty of Social Sciences (section 2f).

Duties

Research and teaching in Media and Communication Studies with a focus on Russia and Eurasia. Teaching duties include course responsibility, supervision, and course administration. The position may also include administrative tasks. The teaching load is a maximum of 50 percent.

Qualifications

Eligible for appointment as Assistant Professor is one who has completed a doctoral degree or has attained equivalent scientific competence and meets the requirements for pedagogical skill. Priority will be given to applicants who have completed a doctoral degree or attained equivalent competence no more than five years before the application deadline. In addition, the applicant must meet the requirements prescribed in the Employment Regulations of Uppsala University (§ 39) and the guidelines of the Faculty of Social Sciences (section 2 e).

The pedagogical skill, scientific competence, and professional skill must be relevant to the subject content of the position and the duties included in the appointment.

According to the Employment Regulations of Uppsala University, a general eligibility requirement for teachers is that the applicant must have the ability to collaborate and otherwise meet the requirements of suitability needed to perform the duties of the position well.

Eligibility requires documented ability to teach in Swedish and English. One who at the start of employment only masters one of these languages must, no later than within two years, be able to teach in the other as well. It is also a requirement that the applicant can use as a working language one of the languages within the post-Soviet region.
