Uppsala University, Department of Medical Sciences
Description of the Field
The disease panorama within pulmonary medicine spans several common public health conditions, such as asthma, sleep apnea, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), allergic airway diseases, and lung cancer. Within these areas, the research group conducts clinical and epidemiological studies. In collaboration with preclinical research groups, the group also participates in several translational projects.
Job Responsibilities
The responsibilities include research, teaching, clinical duties, and administration. Teaching duties encompass course responsibility, course administration, and supervision of doctoral students. The incumbent also has a responsibility to follow developments within their own field. The appointed professor is expected to lead an active research group and to initiate and drive research projects. The appointee is also expected to have the ability to secure external research grants through competition.
The appointment also includes clinical work as a specialist physician in pulmonary medicine at Uppsala University Hospital, creating a close link between research, education, and clinical practice.
Qualifications
Eligibility for appointment as a professor requires demonstrated scientific and pedagogical proficiency (Chapter 4, Section 3 of the Higher Education Ordinance). According to Section 5 of the Employment Regulations for Uppsala University (AO), the general eligibility requirement for teachers is that the applicant must have the ability to collaborate and otherwise meet the requirements of suitability needed to perform the duties well.
Scientific proficiency must be demonstrated through independent research efforts and by the applicant's merits holding very high quality from an international perspective.
Pedagogical proficiency must be demonstrated through extensive merits in education in accordance with Section 22 of the AO. In addition, the applicant must show well-documented proficiency in supervision at the undergraduate, advanced, and doctoral levels. A prerequisite for pedagogical proficiency is the completion of a relevant university pedagogy course of at least ten weeks, or equivalent knowledge. The pedagogical education must include doctoral supervision training (Section 32 of the AO).
Eligibility for this position requires a medical degree and Swedish certification as a specialist in pulmonary medicine. Applicants who lack Swedish specialist certification in pulmonary medicine must have submitted an application for this to the National Board of Health and Welfare by the last day of the application period.
The applicant must have documented ability to teach in both Swedish and English (Section 6 of the AO).
Evaluation Criteria
In the selection among eligible applicants, primary weight will be given to scientific proficiency, followed by pedagogical proficiency. However, a holistic assessment will be made, meaning that an applicant with significant advantages in pedagogical proficiency may be ranked ahead of an applicant with certain advantages in scientific proficiency. Clinical proficiency is also significant for the position and will be weighted accordingly.
Scientific proficiency refers to research merits. When assessing scientific proficiency, scientific quality should be considered primarily. The scope of the research, particularly regarding depth and breadth, should also be given weight. Furthermore, the ability to plan, initiate, lead, and develop research and education at the doctoral level, the ability to secure research funding through competition, and the ability to collaborate with the surrounding society through research should be given weight (Section 20 of the AO).
Pedagogical proficiency refers to educational merits. When assessing pedagogical proficiency, pedagogical quality should be considered primarily. The scope, both breadth and depth, should also be given weight.
Clinical proficiency is demonstrated through clinical work, clinical education, and participation in clinical development work. Clinical development work includes, among other things, initiatives that have improved or streamlined healthcare (Section 24 of the AO).
Evaluation Criteria, Other Proficiencies
Administrative proficiency and leadership skills are significant for the position and will be weighted. The ability to collaborate with the surrounding society, as well as to disseminate information about research and development work, will be considered.
Administrative proficiency is demonstrated, among other things, by the ability to plan, organize, and prioritize work in an efficient and purpose-adapted manner, as well as the ability to set and adhere to timeframes. Proficiency includes overall operational planning and the ability to manage resources in a way that reflects the organization's priorities (Section 28 of the AO).
Leadership skills are demonstrated by the ability to lead operations and personnel, make decisions, take responsibility, and motivate and provide others with the prerequisites needed to efficiently achieve common goals. The ability to coordinate the group, contribute to creating engagement, participation, and job satisfaction, and the ability to handle conflicts are further examples of demonstrated proficiency (Section 30 of the AO). See also Section 5 of the Public Administration Act.
When assessing collaborative proficiency, experience and proficiency in popular science work, editorship, and other activities involving knowledge exchange between the university and the outside world, as well as experience in innovation and entrepreneurship, should be given weight (Section 6 of the Public Administration Act).
In a combined assessment of applicants' merits, parental leave, part-time work due to care of children, trade union duties, military service, or similar should be considered as working life experience (Section 94 of the AO).
When the university appoints new teachers, applicants should be chosen who, after a qualitative holistic assessment of competence and proficiency, are judged to have the best prerequisites for carrying out and developing current job duties and contributing to a positive development of the operations (Section 4 of the AO).
International experts may be consulted in the assessment of submitted applications. In such cases, application documents written in Swedish may need to be sent to a translator hired by the university.
