Description of the Field

Hematology is a central clinical and academic field with strong connections to both research and teaching, as well as to highly specialized healthcare. The field encompasses the diagnosis and treatment of malignant and benign blood diseases, including leukemias, lymphomas, myeloma, and myelodysplastic syndromes, as well as stem cell transplantation and advanced cell therapy.

Job Responsibilities

The professorship entails overarching responsibility for exercising unifying and strategic academic leadership and for the long-term development of the field of hematology.

The appointed individual is expected to lead and develop research within hematology and to actively contribute to education at the undergraduate, advanced, and doctoral levels. The professor is to supervise doctoral students and contribute to the development of the research environment, including actively seeking external research funding.

The position also includes clinical work as a specialist physician in hematology at Uppsala University Hospital, implying a close link between research, education, and clinical practice. The professor is expected to contribute to collaboration with healthcare and the surrounding society.

Qualifications

Eligible for appointment as a professor is one who has demonstrated both scientific and pedagogical proficiency (Chapter 4, Section 3 of the Higher Education Act). According to Section 5 of the Employment Regulations for Uppsala University (AO), the general eligibility requirement for teachers is that the applicant must have the ability to cooperate and otherwise meet the requirements of suitability needed to perform the duties of the position well.

Scientific proficiency must have been demonstrated through independent research efforts and by the applicant's merits holding very high quality from an international perspective.

Pedagogical proficiency must have been demonstrated through extensive merits in education in accordance with Section 22 of the AO. In addition, the applicant must show well-documented proficiency in supervision at the undergraduate, advanced, and doctoral levels. A prerequisite for pedagogical proficiency to be considered present is the completion of a relevant higher education pedagogical course of at least ten weeks, or equivalent knowledge. The pedagogical education must include doctoral supervision training. (Section 32 AO)

For eligibility for this position, a medical degree and Swedish certification of specialist competence in hematology are required. If the applicant lacks Swedish certification of specialist competence in hematology, they must have submitted an application for this to the National Board of Health and Welfare by the last day of the application period.

The applicant must have documented ability to teach in Swedish and English. (Section 6 AO)

Evaluation Criteria

In the selection among eligible applicants, emphasis will be placed primarily on scientific proficiency and secondarily on pedagogical proficiency. However, a combined assessment will be made such that an applicant with significant advantages in pedagogical proficiency may be ranked ahead of an applicant with certain advantages in scientific proficiency. Clinical proficiency is also significant for the position and will be given weight.

Scientific proficiency refers to research merits. When assessing scientific proficiency, scientific quality should be considered first and foremost. The scope of the research, primarily with regard to depth and breadth, should also be given importance. Furthermore, the ability to plan, initiate, lead, and develop research and education at the doctoral level, the ability to obtain research funding competitively, and the ability to collaborate with the surrounding society through research should be given importance. Pedagogical proficiency refers to educational merits. When assessing pedagogical proficiency, pedagogical quality should be considered first and foremost. The scope, both breadth and depth, should also be given importance.

Clinical proficiency is demonstrated through clinical work and clinical education, as well as participation in clinical development work. Clinical development work includes, among other things, initiatives that have improved or streamlined healthcare. (Section 24 AO)

Evaluation Criteria, Other Proficiencies

Administrative proficiency and leadership skills are significant for the position and will be given weight. The ability to collaborate with the surrounding society as well as to inform about research and development work will be considered.

Administrative proficiency is demonstrated, among other things, by the ability to plan, organize, and prioritize work in an effective and purpose-adapted manner, as well as by the ability to set and adhere to timeframes. The proficiency includes overall operational planning and the ability to handle resources in a way that reflects the organization's priorities. (Section 28 AO)

Leadership skills are demonstrated by the ability to lead operations and personnel, make decisions, take responsibility, and motivate and provide others with the prerequisites needed to efficiently achieve common goals. The ability to coordinate the group as well as to contribute to creating engagement, participation, and job satisfaction, and the ability to handle conflicts are further examples of demonstrated proficiency. When assessing collaborative proficiency, experience and proficiency in popular science work, editorship, and other activities concerning knowledge exchange between the university and the outside world, as well as experience in innovation and entrepreneurship, should be given importance. (Section 6 RB)

In a combined assessment of the applicants' merits, parental leave, part-time work due to childcare, trade union duties, military service, or similar should be considered as work experience. (Section 94 AO)

When the university is to hire new teachers, the applicants should be chosen as those who, after a qualitative overall assessment of competence and proficiency, are judged to have the best prerequisites for carrying out and developing current job duties and contributing to a positive development of the operations. (Section 4 AO)

International experts may be engaged in the assessment of submitted applications. In this case, application documents written in Swedish may need to be sent to a translator hired by the university.
