Gothenburg University meets society's challenges with diverse knowledge. With 58,000 students and 6,800 employees, the university is a large and inspiring workplace. Strong research and attractive education attract researchers and students from all over the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, Gothenburg University contributes to a better future.

The Department of Chemistry and Molecular Biology conducts high-quality research and education in chemical sciences and molecular life sciences. Our research and education focus on a deep understanding of chemical and biological processes in cells and in the environment. We are responsible for doctoral education in the subject area of Natural Sciences with a focus on chemistry, biophysics, biology, and educational science. In addition, the department hosts educational programs in molecular biology, genomics and systems biology, chemistry, organic chemistry and medicinal chemistry, as well as the pharmacy program. The department is an international environment with interdisciplinary collaborations in both research and education, and contributes strongly to Gothenburg University's top ranking in life science. The department's operations are carried out in Natrium, Medicinareberget in Gothenburg.

The research in Per Sunnerhagen's group deals with RNA biology and proteins as target molecules for drugs against parasitic diseases. Most of our work is performed in yeast cells, and includes molecular biology, protein biochemistry, bioinformatics, and microscopy.

Job Responsibilities

The main job responsibilities include performing experiments on the experimental evolution of transgenic yeast strains with the aim of developing resistance to small molecules targeting a specific target protein. Furthermore, genome sequences from these will be analyzed and critical mutations identified. The relationship between mutations and their phenotypic effects will be analyzed using mathematical and computer-aided modeling. Specific candidate mutations will be introduced and their resistance to small molecules that inhibit the target protein will be tested. Potential interactions between small molecules and target proteins will be simulated in silico. Finally, experimental results will be compiled, analyzed, and prepared for publication.

Qualifications

Eligible for appointment as a postdoc is someone who has completed a doctoral degree, or a foreign degree assessed to correspond to a doctoral degree. This eligibility requirement must be met no later than at the time the employment decision is made. Preference will be given to those who have completed their doctoral degree no more than three years before the application deadline. If there are special reasons, the doctoral degree may have been completed earlier.

Other requirements: Very good knowledge of academic English, both spoken and written.

Meritorious requirements: The applicant should have experience with advanced experimental techniques relevant to the position, such as genome analysis and design of DNA constructs, especially in yeast. Experience with experimental evolution is also meritorious.

Employment

The employment is fixed-term for 2 years on a full-time basis (100%) with placement at the Department of Chemistry and Molecular Biology at Gothenburg University. Start in September 2026 or by agreement.
