Job Responsibilities

Your responsibilities as a mother tongue teacher include planning, implementing, and evaluating teaching. As needed, you will also assist with translation during student meetings and when transferring information between school and student/home.

You are expected to be an active part of the daily work and contribute to the development of work teams and students to achieve higher goal fulfillment. You should be well-versed in the school's governing documents and able to translate these into practical work.

As a mother tongue teacher, you will work both independently and in work groups, as well as participate in APT (Annual Principal-Teacher Meetings) and other pedagogical meetings. The work takes place at various schools in the municipality, which means you may need to move around during the day. In addition, standard tasks such as planning lessons and handling attendance reporting for your students are included. Flexibility is of great importance as schedules and student materials may change during the term.

About the Workplace

The primary task of the Child and Education Administration is to offer a safe and stimulating learning environment where we equip children and young people for the future. We also work to promote access to cultural and leisure activities for all residents.

The Mother Tongue and Study Guidance Unit is a unit within the primary school organization. The unit has a unit manager who is organized within the principal's group. We currently have 32 employed teachers working in the municipality's various schools. Our development areas are assessment and grading, as well as work based on scientific foundation and proven experience. The unit aims for all children who speak a language other than Swedish at home to receive instruction in their own language. The teaching helps the student develop their language and learn more about their own culture.

What We Are Looking For

To succeed in the role, you have:

  • academic education or other background that the employer deems equivalent
  • experience in teaching, preferably previous experience working with mother tongue in primary and upper secondary school
  • documented good knowledge of the Swedish language, both spoken and written
  • Finnish as a mother tongue
  • knowledge of handling digital learning tools.

It is meritorious if you have:

  • teacher certification in the subject of mother tongue (Finnish)
  • experience of the Swedish school system and insight into the schools' curricula
  • experience in handling digital learning tools used in your teaching in accordance with the curriculum.

Personal qualities we are looking for

As a person, you have a good understanding of how humans acquire knowledge and people's different prerequisites. You have the ability to create good relationships with students, which provides study peace and engagement in teaching. You are self-initiative and can drive what is expected based on governing documents, pedagogical planning, and course plans, while also having good cooperation skills and a flexible approach to emerging situations. You value differences and have a good understanding of how background and group affiliation affect a person. In the role as a study guide, it is important that you have good insight and knowledge of Swedish culture and its traditions.
