Workplace Description

The Department of Electrical and Information Technology conducts high-quality research in a wide range of areas within electrical engineering and computer science, from pure theoretical research to applied projects in close collaboration with industry. It is at the forefront of international research in most of its fields. The department consists of around 100 active researchers, focusing on several research domains, including security and network systems, communication technology, integrated electronic systems, as well as electromagnetics and nanoelectronics.

Specific Subject Description

Machine learning and artificial intelligence have attracted significant attention in recent decades. Machine learning algorithms have been used in many application domains, including the Internet of Things (IoT), autonomous systems, and medical and healthcare applications. The use of machine learning in these domains creates many new opportunities but also presents several major challenges, such as the complexity of machine learning algorithms and the reliability and trustworthiness of decisions made using these algorithms.

The purpose of this postdoctoral project is to address one of the biggest challenges in the field of machine learning. The project will be tailored to your background and expertise, and you will work in an interdisciplinary research environment. A key part of the work involves developing the theoretical foundation for reliable machine learning and new algorithms to handle the challenges within this environment. Therefore, a solid theoretical background in machine learning is expected.

Responsibilities

The primary responsibility of the postdoctoral position is to conduct research. Teaching may also be included, comprising no more than one-fifth of the working hours. As part of the employment, there is an opportunity to undergo three weeks of higher education pedagogy training. The purpose of the employment is to develop independence as a researcher and create conditions for further career advancement.

The responsibilities include:

• Conducting research within the subject area.
• Teaching at undergraduate, advanced, and doctoral levels.
• Supervising thesis students and doctoral candidates.
• Working on securing external research funding.
• Collaborating with industry and society.
• Administration related to the above tasks.

Qualifications

To be eligible for employment as a postdoctoral researcher, one must have completed a PhD or a foreign degree assessed as equivalent to a PhD within the subject area of the employment. Proof that the eligibility requirement is met must be submitted no later than the time the employment decision is made. Preference will be given to applicants who have completed their degree within three years of the application deadline. In exceptional cases, a PhD obtained earlier may be considered.

Other Requirements:

• Excellent knowledge of English, both spoken and written.
• Excellent documented knowledge of machine learning.

Evaluation Criteria

This is a merit-based position primarily focused on research. The employment is intended as an initial step in a career, and the assessment of applicants will primarily be based on their scientific merits and potential as researchers. Special emphasis will be placed on scientific ability within the subject area.

In the employment of a postdoctoral researcher, the following shall form the basis for assessment:

• Good ability to develop and conduct high-quality research.
• Teaching ability.

Consideration will be given to how the applicant, through their experience and competence, is assessed to complement and strengthen the research within the department/faculty and contribute to its future development.

Other Information

The employment is fixed-term for 2 years and is full-time. The start date is as soon as possible by agreement, but no later than 2027-01-01.

The fixed-term employment is governed by the collective agreement, “Agreement on Fixed-Term Employment as a Postdoctoral Researcher”.
