The Department of Health Sciences is looking for an engaged, creative, and recently PhD-qualified individual who can contribute to the university's development in research and teaching through an Assistant Professorship!

The Department of Health Sciences offers education in the field of health sciences at undergraduate and advanced levels across several areas and has 120 employees with operations located in five cities: Kalmar, Växjö, Oskarshamn, Västervik, and Ljungby. Extensive research and teaching are conducted at the department in the subjects of health sciences and nursing science. The department educates nurses, specialist nurses, and midwives. The department also conducts research in several areas, e.g., global health, palliative care, emergency care, psychiatric care, and safety systems in healthcare, and currently has approximately 45 doctoral students.

Subject Area for the Position: Nursing Science/Health Sciences.

Place of Employment (Permanent): Kalmar/Växjö. Since the department's operations are located in several cities, travel between locations may occur.

Employment Duration: Fixed-term appointment for 4 years.

Start Date: According to agreement. Normally, a probationary employment is applied.

According to the Higher Education Ordinance (HF 4:12c), an Assistant Professor shall, upon application, be promoted to Professor if they are qualified for a Professor position and, upon assessment, are deemed suitable for such a position according to the assessment criteria relevant to the appointment. Such promotion entails a permanent appointment as a Professor. The application and assessment for promotion to Professor must take place within the period of employment as an Assistant Professor.

Job Description:

As an Assistant Professor, you are expected to work with both research and education. On at least 50% of the position, an Assistant Professor is expected to conduct research within their subject with the aim of qualifying for promotion to Professor and potentially Docent.

Within the framework of the employment, you will have an active role in strengthening and building research environments within the department's operations. You are expected to have continuous presence at the workplace to actively contribute to collaboration and the development of the research environment. It is part of the duties to actively seek external research funding, plan and conduct research, and publish research results in international scientific journals and conferences. You should also actively participate in national and international research activities.

The employment also includes pedagogical tasks, such as teaching, coordination, and development of courses at undergraduate and advanced levels within the department's educational mission, as well as collaboration with actors in the education sector.

You should have a good ability to lead, coordinate, and develop both education and research. Administrative tasks related to these areas of responsibility may also be included.

Collaborative skills in relation to students, colleagues, research environments, and external partners are of great importance. The tasks are designed and adapted based on the applicant's competence and interest, but also based on the organization's needs and may change over time.

Qualifications

Qualified for appointment as an Assistant Professor is one who has completed a PhD in Nursing Science/Health Sciences or has equivalent scientific competence. Preference should be given to those who have completed a PhD or reached equivalent competence no more than seven years prior to the time of application for the Assistant Professor position. However, those who have completed a PhD or reached equivalent competence earlier may also be considered if there are special reasons. Special reasons refer to leave due to illness, parental leave, or other similar circumstances. (HF 4:4a).

For qualification for this position, the person must also be a licensed nurse. Good knowledge of Swedish and English, both spoken and written, is necessary, as well as computer literacy as part of the teaching takes place in a digital environment.

Assessment Criteria:

The following assessment criteria should be particularly considered for an Assistant Professor according to Linnaeus University's employment regulations: scientific and pedagogical competence, international experience, experience and ability to collaborate, and leadership experience. These assessment criteria will be evaluated when applying for promotion to Professor. Additional merit includes completed university pedagogy education.

When the university hires new teachers, applicants should be chosen who, through a qualitative overall assessment of competence and skill, are judged to have the best conditions to carry out and develop current tasks and contribute to the successful development of the operations.

After four years of employment as an Assistant Professor, the following assessment criteria will be used in the assessment for promotion to Professor:

Guiding for the assessment of scientific competence is the independence, scope, and quality of one's own research.

Pedagogical competence should have been demonstrated through teaching and refers to both the development, planning, implementation, and evaluation of teaching, as well as supervision and examination. Pedagogical competence should show a reflective approach to student learning and to one's own role as a teacher.

  • Documented ability to independently plan and conduct research projects, obtain research funding, and publish scientific works.
  • Formal pedagogical merit in the form of university pedagogy basic education and doctoral supervisor education.
  • Documented pedagogical merits through teaching, course development, pedagogical improvements at undergraduate and advanced levels, and responsibility for all or significant parts of courses.
  • Collaboration with other researchers and joint applications for research funding in related research areas.
