The Department of Laboratory Medicine consists of seven divisions that conduct both research and teaching. The department is involved in advanced research encompassing both basic and applied research. All divisions work in close collaboration with clinicians at Karolinska University Hospital. The Division of Biomolecular and Cellular Medicine (BCM) focuses on the use of modified biomolecules, cells, and cell products as new therapeutic drugs, as well as the identification and study of suitable biomolecular and cellular targets for therapy and diagnostics. The division is also linked to the Karolinska ATMP Centre.

The research group in the EL Andaloussi lab takes on one of the most critical challenges in modern therapy: the efficient delivery of macromolecules to target cells in vivo. Despite significant advances in understanding diseases and exploring mechanisms, many promising therapeutic methods remain inaccessible in clinical settings due to a lack of effective delivery systems. To address this, we focus on developing groundbreaking new drug delivery technologies that enable the safe and efficient transport of proteins, RNA, and gene editors to specific tissues.

The lab has established expertise in the engineering of extracellular vesicles (EVs), such as exosomes, which are optimized for therapeutic delivery and targeting. In our efforts to push boundaries, we also explore other advanced delivery systems, including lipid nanoparticles (LNPs), to meet specific therapeutic challenges. The lab's therapy platform uses biological and synthetic nanoparticles for targeted delivery of therapeutic agents in relevant cell and animal models, aiming to identify the most effective methods for various applications.

The Division of Biomolecular and Cellular Medicine is now seeking a Research Assistant with a strong background and practical experience in nanoparticle analysis. This role is part of a newly established, grant-funded team led by André Görgens. Based on a decade of experience with strong merits in analysis and method development for the characterization of extracellular vesicles as well as process development, the Görgens lab now aims to develop the next generation of nanoparticle analysis and sorting platforms in close collaboration with the EL Andaloussi lab. One of the main goals of the Görgens lab is to build a dedicated platform for high-resolution analysis and sorting of extracellular vesicles using flow cytometric and orthogonal methods.

Your role

We are looking for an ambitious researcher who will develop methods for the analysis and sorting of extracellular vesicles and other nanoparticles. The focus is on developing flow cytometry-based workflows and procedures, as well as optimizing pre-analytical variables for extracellular vesicles from body fluids and cells, as well as for synthetic nanoparticles, within the framework of developing next-generation therapies and diagnostics.

Who are you?

The ideal candidate has a strong foundation in biochemistry, biotechnology, bioinformatics, or process development in pharmaceutical development or engineering/science, ideally with experience in flow cytometry for nanoparticles and flow cytometric cell sorting, nanoparticle formulation, or related areas in the production and analysis of nanoparticles.

Requirements:

  • Hold at least a bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, physics, biotechnology, engineering, or a related field, with ongoing or completed advanced studies (e.g., master's degree) in medical biotechnology or a similar area.
  • Have practical experience with basic laboratory techniques, such as PCR, DNA/RNA extraction, molecular cloning, bacterial transformation, protein purification, western blotting, cytofluorometric analysis, or immunofluorescence.
  • Have practical experience and knowledge of flow cytometry-based methods (e.g., flow cytometry analysis or fluorescence-activated cell sorting, regarding cells or nanoparticles).
  • Have experience with other relevant analytical techniques (e.g., DLS, NTA, electron microscopy).
  • Have relevant experience in the production and formulation of biological or synthetic nanoparticles, e.g., in the context of biomarker identification or drug delivery.
  • Be fluent in English, self-motivated, meticulous, and collaborative, with a passion for contributing to therapeutic advances and tackling scientific challenges, as well as the ability to work independently.
