The position of Assistant Professor in Journalism is located at the Department of Media and Journalism (MJ). The department is a creative environment with education and research in three subjects: media production, journalism, and media and communication science. The department offers professional-oriented undergraduate programs with research connections, as well as a master's program focused on media and human rights. We offer standalone courses and subject-specific courses within various educational programs.
The research environment at MJ is dynamic and growing, characterized by both subject-specific projects and interdisciplinary collaborations with other relevant partners (LiMO, IMS, IfDem, etc.).
We are now seeking an Assistant Professor in Journalism.
Subject Area: Journalism
Location (Permanent): Kalmar. Since Linnaeus University is located in both Växjö and Kalmar, travel between locations may occur.
Employment Extent: 100% for 4 years.
Start Date: As agreed.
According to the Higher Education Ordinance (HF 4 Chapter 12 c§), an assistant professor shall, upon application, be promoted to professor if they are qualified for a professorship and, upon assessment, are deemed suitable for such a position according to the criteria relevant to the appointment. Such promotion results in a permanent position as a professor. The application and assessment for promotion to professor must take place within the appointment period as an assistant professor.
Job Description
As an Assistant Professor in Journalism at the Department of Media and Journalism, you will contribute to the department's research environment through collaborations, participation in seminar activities, and independent research within journalism and related fields. You are expected to initiate and seek external research funding and collaborate with the surrounding society.
In the role of Assistant Professor, you will participate in teaching and examination at undergraduate and advanced levels, develop, plan, and conduct courses, and supervise degree projects. In addition, you will contribute to the development of education within the subject area, perform administrative tasks, participate in collegial contexts, and contribute to active staff engagement.
Teaching is located on campus in Kalmar within our programs and standalone courses and is conducted in Swedish and English. Some teaching takes place online.
The position comprises 50 percent research and 50 percent teaching within the subject area of journalism.
Qualifications
Eligible for appointment as an Assistant Professor is someone who has completed a PhD in Journalism or has equivalent scientific competence. Preference should be given to those who have completed a PhD or reached equivalent competence no more than seven years prior to the time of application for the position as an Assistant Professor. However, those who have completed a PhD or reached equivalent competence earlier may also be considered if there are special reasons. Special reasons refer to leave due to illness, parental leave, or other similar circumstances. (HF 4 Chapter 4a§).
For eligibility for this position, scientific competence in journalism, teaching experience, and pedagogical experience in journalism or media and communication science are also required, along with a good ability to collaborate both within academia and with the surrounding society.
Furthermore, documented good teamwork skills and a good ability to teach in Swedish and English are required.
Evaluation Criteria
In assessing scientific competence, emphasis will be placed on research experience within the subject of journalism or related research fields. Guiding factors for the assessment are the independence, scope, and quality of one's own research. Ability to initiate, plan, lead, and conduct research both nationally and internationally, as well as the ability to communicate research within and outside academia, will be given significant weight.
Pedagogical competence should have been demonstrated through experience in teaching and pedagogical work within journalism or media and communication science. The competence refers to the ability to plan, conduct, and develop high-quality teaching within the subject, as well as the ability to connect teaching to research by integrating scientific knowledge, theoretical perspectives, and professional experience into teaching.
In assessing collaboration competence, emphasis is placed on the ability to initiate and develop collaboration with the surrounding society, experience of cooperation with the media industry and other societal actors, ability to disseminate, make accessible, and utilize research and education for different target groups, and experience of assignments within academia such as peer review, committee work, or similar.
In assessing teamwork skills, emphasis is placed on experiences of working constructively and responsibly together with others in collegial processes and development work within academic or other operations. The teamwork skills should be documented so that they can be substantiated and evaluated.
Other merits considered are professional experience as a journalist, as well as experience of leadership roles or administrative tasks within academic operations.
When the university hires new teachers, applicants should be chosen who, through a qualitative holistic assessment of competence, skill, and personal suitability to perform the duties, are judged to have the best prerequisites for carrying out and developing the current tasks and contributing to the successful development of the operations.
