Research Project

The doctoral position is linked to the research project Effective Strategies to Reduce Logging Leakage in the Forest, funded by the Marianne and Marcus Wallenberg Foundation and part of the WiForce research program.

The project addresses a central and current research question at the intersection of climate policy, international trade, and environmental and natural resource economics. The purpose is to analyze how forest policy instruments affect the climate, with a special focus on so-called logging leakage. Logging leakage occurs when reduced logging in one country leads to increased logging in other countries due to changed market conditions, which can reduce or counteract the global climate benefit.

The doctoral student will investigate how policy instruments aimed at increasing carbon storage in forests affect logging levels, trade flows, and market dynamics. The work involves analyzing extensive international databases, applying quantitative and empirical methods, and developing scenario models to evaluate different policy alternatives and their effects on the climate and the bioeconomy.

The doctoral student will be part of an active and international research environment and work closely with the project's researchers. The project offers good opportunities for international cooperation, participation in conferences, and publication in international scientific journals. The dissertation will be written as a compilation thesis consisting of scientific articles.

The project is particularly suitable for candidates with an interest in environmental economics, international trade, applied microeconomics, and quantitative methods.

Doctoral Education

The doctoral education comprises four years of full-time studies. The doctoral student is expected to primarily focus on their own doctoral education but may also participate in teaching and other institutional duties up to a maximum of 20% of full-time.

The course program is conducted in cooperation with other universities in Sweden and includes courses in mathematics, microeconomics, macroeconomics, and econometrics, as well as elective courses related to the dissertation work.

The education prepares for an international research career as well as qualified analytical positions within authorities, international organizations, and the private sector.

The general syllabus can be found here: General Syllabus for Economics (https://lnu.se/globalassets/feh/organisation/utbildning/forskarutbildning/asp-nationalekonomi-rev-210210-eng.pdf).
