Job Description

We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher tasked with validating and developing new systems to mimic cancer microenvironments. The appointee will work in multidisciplinary projects in collaboration with research groups at KTH, Karolinska Institutet, SciLifeLab, and Karolinska University Hospital. The host environment is the Division of Nanobiotechnology at SciLifeLab, KTH, within Professor Anna Herland's research group.

The project aims to simulate the tumor microenvironment at two levels of complexity:

  • Tumor-stroma interactions to map self-reinforcing patterns of ligand secretion, which can serve as targets for new therapies. This approach will be strongly supported by in silico models, similar to digital twins, of these interactions.
  • Vascularization of tumor models to enable improved studies of immunotherapies and combination treatments. This will be supported by multimodal in vitro and in vivo modeling as well as clinical material.

The work involves the design and development of new models as well as the validation of existing ones.

Main Responsibilities

  • Design of microphysiological systems and organ-on-chip
  • Manufacturing and validation of microphysiological systems and organ-on-chip
  • Interaction and collaboration with computational researchers and cancer biologists
  • Coordination of activities between project partners
  • Supervision of research engineers/master's students within the projects

Qualifications

Requirements

  • A completed PhD degree or a foreign degree assessed as equivalent to a PhD in bioengineering, biotechnology, microtechnology, or another relevant field. This eligibility requirement must be met no later than the time the employment decision is made.
  • Documented research experience with at least two peer-reviewed articles published or in a far-advanced manuscript stage.

Merits

  • At the application deadline, no more than three years have passed since the PhD degree or a foreign degree assessed as equivalent to a PhD was awarded.
  • Experience in the design and manufacturing of microsystems and microfluidics.
  • Experience in projects within cancer biology.
  • Experience in teaching and supervision.
  • Excellent ability to collaborate with researchers and industry from various disciplines.
  • Excellent ability to work independently.
  • Awareness of diversity and equal opportunity issues, particularly gender equality.
  • Excellent communication skills.

We will place great emphasis on personal qualities.
