Personal Assistant sought for an active 69-year-old man in Vellinge Municipality.

About me:

I am a 69-year-old man currently looking for an additional personal assistant to join my team. I use a wheelchair but can stand with support. Over a year ago, I lost my speech and now use various speech-generating devices and text-to-speech programs.

Before my mobility declined, I was a very physically active person. In addition to maintaining our house and garden, I sailed, played tennis, rode horses, trained our dogs, and traveled extensively. I am also very interested in photography; I have taken photos, developed film, and held exhibitions. All of these remain my interests, even if I no longer practice them in the same way. I previously worked as a civil engineer.

Today, I enjoy going to the theater with my wife, meeting my children and grandchildren, riding out with my scooter and our two dogs, staying informed and up-to-date with news from home and abroad. Therefore, I read and listen to a lot on my iPad. Dining out with my wife, friends, or family is also something I enjoy.

I spend many hours a week on training. Twice a week, for two hours each session, I train with my neurologically specialized physiotherapist. At home, I train with my assistants every day. Once a week, I attend hydrotherapy in a warm-water pool with my assistant. I have a specially adapted car that my assistants drive.

About the job and what I expect from you:

I am looking for someone who is secure, attentive, and responsible, preferably with an aptitude for physical work.

You need to have a driver's license and be flexible, as your workplace is wherever I am: at home in our well-adapted single-story house and garden, but also at my children's homes, during training, at the theater, or at medical appointments.

You will be my extended arm and help me with things I can no longer do myself, both in daily life and in training, which I take very seriously. Therefore, it is important that you engage with my exercises and learn them.

You should be structured, forward-thinking, and help me keep track of aids, times, and items that need to be brought along. Communication is also important, for example during phone calls or doctor's visits.

You need to be able to work days, evenings, nights, weekdays, and weekends according to schedule, and be flexible to cover for colleagues.

You will receive side-by-side guidance until both you and I feel secure and you feel confident in the routines.

Experience in personal assistance is a plus, but not a requirement. Your personality is the most important factor, as you will be, more or less, part of my closest family. A family that sometimes consists only of my wife and me, and sometimes of adult children and grandchildren of varying ages. We have two dogs (Schapendoes), so liking animals is a plus.

You will have pleasant colleagues, as I have a wonderful group around me characterized by humor, laughter, joy, singing, music, and multiple languages, although Swedish must be the foundation.

I organize my assistance through Kooperativa SMIL. This is a user-run association that provides personal assistance for people living in Malmö and the surrounding area. It is a cooperative without profit motives!

Naturally, SMIL has a collective agreement, meaning personal assistants have access to, for example, occupational pension. We offer a wellness allowance twice a year. We regularly organize various training courses that you as a personal assistant will benefit from in your work.

We are an IfA-approved assistance provider with roots in the movement that once made personal assistance a possibility in Sweden. SMIL has both members and employed staff who have been with us since SMIL's early days! SMIL has permission to provide assistance according to IVO regulations.
