Västerbergslagens Educational Consortium (VBU) is a municipal consortium that provides upper secondary education, adult education, vocational higher education, and commissioned training. We operate on behalf of the municipalities of Ludvika and Smedjebacken. VBU has approximately 260 employees, around 3,000 students (including 1,000 at the Cultural School), and an annual turnover of approximately 280 million SEK. Our operations are located in Ludvika, Smedjebacken, and Grängesberg. More information about our various schools can be found on our website.
Children and young people are important in Ludvika and Smedjebacken! We demonstrate this by making children and young people the focal point of the municipal organization. Most resources directed towards children and young people have been consolidated under a single committee. This includes preschool, primary and secondary schools, special education, and social welfare. A common thread across all these activities is a conscious quality assurance effort to continuously develop and improve work with children and young people. The Cultural School has been part of Västerbergslagens Educational Consortium since 2019.
Västerbergslagens Cultural School has approximately 900 active students in the subjects of music, dance, theater, visual arts, and digital creation, with a total of 27 employees. The Cultural School primarily targets children and young people but also accepts adult students. We have many orchestras and ensembles where students can participate. In 2025, we held approximately 85 concerts and other outward-facing activities.
