Lund University was founded in 1666 and is consistently ranked among the world's leading universities. We have approximately 46,000 students and 8,500 employees in Lund, Helsingborg, and Malmö. We are united in our strive to understand, explain, and improve our world and people's conditions.

Description of the activity

We are looking for a Project Assistant for a fixed-term position within the Group for Integrative Neurophysiology at Lund University. The project will be carried out in collaboration with the Movement & Reality Laboratory (MoRe Lab), a research environment at the Faculty of Medicine featuring an instrumented apartment equipped with 25 synchronized cameras and sensors to study human behavior in a realistic home environment.

The current position is linked to a project aimed at developing an automated platform for the analysis of Activities of Daily Living (ADL) based on video and motion data. The project focuses on implementing new methods in computer vision and machine learning for 3D pose estimation and activity recognition, with applications in neurology, rehabilitation, and aging.

The research environment is interdisciplinary and includes expertise in neuroscience, biomechanics, and artificial intelligence.

Project Description

The project aims to develop and implement a robust pipeline for markerless 3D pose estimation and activity analysis based on multi-camera data. This includes the development of transformer-based models for 3D reconstruction as well as methods for classifying and segmenting human activities.

The methods will be validated on clinical populations, such as patients with Parkinson's disease and children with cerebral palsy, to enable objective quantification of movement ability in everyday environments.

Tasks and Responsibilities

As a Research Assistant, you will contribute to the development, implementation, and validation of analysis methods. The tasks include:

  • Implementation and adaptation of algorithms for 2D/3D pose estimation
  • Development of methods for activity recognition and segmentation
  • Video recording with test subjects
  • Annotating large video-based datasets
  • Evaluation and validation of models against experimental data
  • Documentation of results

Qualifications

Requirements for the position are:

  • Master's degree in a relevant field, such as computer science, behavioral science, or neuroscience
  • Documented experience in programming in Python or similar languages
  • Experience in machine learning or signal processing
  • Good knowledge of English, both spoken and written
  • Ability to work independently and in interdisciplinary teams

Merits for the position are:

  • Experience in computer vision
  • Experience with deep learning frameworks (e.g., PyTorch or TensorFlow)
  • Experience in collecting experimental data with test subjects
  • Experience in motion capture
  • Experience in handling larger datasets
  • Good knowledge of Swedish
  • Previous work with behavioral data
  • Experience in scientific programming

Great emphasis will be placed on personal suitability, teamwork skills, and analytical ability.

What we offer

You will work in an international and interdisciplinary research environment with access to unique infrastructure and advanced data collection systems. The position offers the opportunity to contribute to the development of future digital tools for clinical research and societal benefit.

About the employment

The employment is a fixed-term position for six months, full-time (100%), starting September 1st or as agreed. The work is located in Lund and requires on-site presence.

More about the Faculty of Medicine

The Faculty of Medicine is a business area within Lund University, responsible for education and research in medicine, care, and health. The education takes place in close collaboration with healthcare and is well rooted in the faculty's strong research tradition. The faculty's research spans a broad field within experimental basic research, patient-oriented clinical research, and health science research. The Faculty of Medicine, with just over 1,800 employees and 3,000 students in Lund, Malmö, and Helsingborg, is a knowledge-intensive meeting place for students, teachers, and researchers from all over the world.
