Do you want to work on software for collecting, storing, and processing research data, supported by competent and friendly colleagues in an international environment? Do you want to gain experience working at a university? You are welcome to apply for a position as a Project Assistant at the Department of Information Technology, Uppsala University.
Responsibilities
The primary responsibility is to develop software for the collection, processing, and analysis of experimental data from the Ångström Advanced Battery Centre. This involves writing modular and well-documented code, as well as designing data pipelines for storage and further analysis. You will be part of an interdisciplinary team of engineering students working at the forefront of laboratory automation and digitalization. You will have access to a shared workspace at Ångström, technical support from research engineers and teachers, and regular knowledge exchange with colleagues working on real-world challenges in robotics, electronics, data infrastructure, and scientific software. This initiative, called Åutomate, is designed as both a practical engineering environment and a professional network – featuring voluntary seminars, informal lunches (and coffee breaks), and close collaboration with active research groups – providing you with practical experience directly relevant to advanced engineering careers in research and industry, or for future doctoral studies.
Qualifications
The applicant should demonstrate good academic results, particularly in the area of the course(s) they will assist with, and possess very good skills in English, both spoken and written.
The position requires strong programming skills, primarily in Python. The applicant must have experience in at least one of the following areas:
- Programming: Ability to write clean, modular, and well-documented code; experience with scientific Python libraries (e.g., NumPy, Pandas, SciPy); familiarity with version control (e.g., Git). Experience with instrument control or embedded systems is advantageous.
- Data Processing and Storage: Experience with data pipelines, signal analysis, or computer vision; knowledge of relational or non-relational databases and structured data formats (e.g., HDF5, CSV, JSON).
Good organizational skills and the ability to work independently are required, as the role involves designing and implementing data workflows with limited supervision alongside ongoing studies.
Desirable/Additional Qualifications
Previous coursework or work experience in data processing, database management, or scientific software development is desirable. Familiarity with version control (e.g., Git) and experience with graphical user interfaces for controlling laboratory instruments are also advantageous.
Application Process
The application should include a cover letter briefly describing your experience in relevant subjects, along with a transcript of records. Please also describe and explain why you are interested in the position.
