PhD Candidate in Cybersecurity and Software Engineering
Lund University was founded in 1666 and is consistently ranked among the world’s top universities. We have around 46,000 students and 8,500 employees in Lund, Helsingborg, and Malmö. We unite in our efforts to understand, explain, and improve our world and the conditions of humanity.
Description of the Department
The Department of Security and Network Systems at the Faculty of Engineering conducts broad research in cryptography, computer security, wireless and wired networks.
The security group consists of about 20 members. The main research focuses are cryptography, privacy, and system security for connected systems.
We are now looking for a new PhD candidate to work in cybersecurity and software engineering in a project funded by the Strategic Research Foundation (SSF).
Being a PhD Candidate
As a PhD candidate, you are both admitted as a student and employed at Lund University.
As a doctoral student, you are trained in a scientific approach. This can be briefly described as gaining practice in critical and analytical thinking, solving problems independently with the right methodological choices, and developing research ethics awareness. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to work on projects, develop your leadership skills, and enhance your pedagogical abilities. Throughout your studies, you will be guided by supervisors. Doctoral studies conclude with a dissertation and a doctoral degree. More about being a PhD candidate at LTH.
Project Description
You will work on the RESIST project and primarily contribute to the area of protection for distributed AI. RESIST collaborates with Linköping University, Örebro University, and the research institute RISE and is a multidisciplinary research center working on the rapidly growing field of developing conditions and techniques to protect future AI-based systems. The center is led by Linköping University with Lund University as a partner.
Responsibilities
The main responsibilities include conducting research and teaching at the intersection of cybersecurity and software engineering. The research focuses on automated principles for analyzing program code. This includes how AI models can analyze and correct software to ensure it does not contain vulnerabilities. For example, it has been shown that AI-generated code often has significant security flaws. To use AI-generated code in high-security applications, the code generation must be made much more robust. Part of the responsibilities includes evaluating existing techniques from a security perspective and finding principles for automatic analysis and code correction. Case studies and experimental research are expected to be central research methods in the doctoral project.
You will primarily focus on your doctoral education, which includes participation in research projects, doctoral courses, seminars, and conferences.
Your responsibilities will also include participation in teaching and other departmental work (maximum 20% of working time).
Qualifications
To be admitted and employed as a PhD candidate, you need to meet the following requirements.
