PhD Student in Computational Complexity at Lund University
Lund University was founded in 1666 and is consistently ranked among the world's leading universities. There are about 46,000 students and 8,500 employees in Lund, Helsingborg, and Malmö. We unite in our effort to understand, explain, and improve our world and the conditions of people.
About the Department
There is a growing research group in the fundamental areas of computer science at Lund University.
We expect to have 8 PhD students by autumn, in addition to three faculty members and two postdoctoral researchers. Our group's research covers various aspects of complexity theory and includes both combinatorial and logical perspectives. Central areas of interest include proof complexity, circuit complexity, communication complexity, meta-complexity, and their connections to algorithms.
Lund University is located in the Øresund region, which offers one of the strongest and most exciting environments for research in computational complexity in Europe. There is extensive collaboration with the University of Copenhagen (UCPH), the IT University of Copenhagen (ITU), and the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) on the other side of the Øresund Bridge.
Being a PhD Student
As a PhD student, you are both admitted as a student and employed at Lund University.
As a research student, you are trained in a scientific approach. This can be briefly described as gaining practice in critical and analytical thinking, solving problems independently with the right method choices, and developing research ethics awareness. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to work on projects, develop your leadership skills, and enhance your pedagogical abilities. Throughout your studies, you will be guided by supervisors. The doctoral studies conclude with a dissertation and a doctoral degree.

Subject and Project Description
We are announcing one to two PhD positions focusing on computational complexity. Computational complexity is about understanding what makes a problem hard or easy to solve with a computer. We want to understand which properties of a computational problem necessitate that every algorithm solving it must consume large amounts of resources (which can be runtime, memory, etc.). This is mathematically oriented fundamental research, but research results in computational complexity have influenced many other areas within computer science and other scientific disciplines and have given rise to some of the most important unsolved questions in modern mathematics. Both PhD students will be funded by WASP – Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program – and will be part of its national graduate school.
Job Responsibilities
You will primarily focus on your doctoral education, which includes participating in research projects as well as doctoral courses, seminars, and conferences. The position allows for up to six months of international experience.
The job responsibilities include:
- participating in research projects, working independently and collaboratively with others
- literature review
- writing research papers
- presenting results
Job responsibilities may also include participation in teaching and other departmental work (but no more than 20% of the working time).
Qualifications
To be admitted and employed as a PhD student, you need to meet the requirements below.

LTH – Lund University of Technology – is part of Lund University. At LTH, we educate people, build knowledge for the future, and work hard to develop society. We create space for brilliant research and inspire creative development in technology, architecture, and design. Nearly 12,000 students study here. Each year, our researchers – many of whom work in world-leading profile areas – publish about 100 dissertations and 2,000 scientific findings. A number of research results and student projects are refined into innovations. Together we explore and create – for the benefit of the world.
We kindly ask all contacts from ad sellers, recruitment, and staffing companies to refrain from contacting us due to government procurement regulations.
