PhD Position in Physics at Lund University
Lund University was founded in 1666 and is consistently ranked among the world's top universities. There are about 46,000 students and 8,500 employees in Lund, Helsingborg, and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain, and improve our world and the conditions of humanity.
Description of the Institution
The Department of Physics is one of the largest departments at Lund University, with approximately 350 researchers and teachers.
The department consists of seven research divisions and several research centers. The research activities cover a wide spectrum of modern physics. www.fysik.lu.se/english (http://www.fysik.lu.se/english).
The Division of Synchrotron Radiation Research (www.sljus.lu.se (http://www.sljus.lu.se)) at the Department of Physics has around 50 employees. The research focuses on experimental studies of the electronic, structural, and chemical properties of materials, as well as on accelerators and instrumentation for synchrotron radiation. The Division of Solid State Physics conducts extensive research focusing on various aspects of nanophysics, ranging from materials science to bio- and quantum physics, as well as various applications.
NanoLund (www.nano.lu.se (http://www.nano.lu.se)) is the center for nanoscience at Lund University. Today, NanoLund is Sweden's largest research environment for nanoscience, with more than 400 doctoral students and researchers at the faculties of engineering, science, and medicine. It also operates Lund Nano Lab, a state-of-the-art cleanroom for the synthesis, processing, and characterization of semiconductor nanostructures.
Being a PhD Student
As a PhD student, you are both admitted as a student and employed at Lund University.
As a research student, you are trained in a scientific approach. This can be briefly described as gaining practice in critical and analytical thinking, solving problems independently using the right methodological choices, and developing research ethics awareness. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to work on projects, develop your leadership skills, and enhance your teaching abilities. Throughout your studies, you will be guided by supervisors. The doctoral studies conclude with a dissertation and a doctoral degree.
More about being a PhD student at the Faculty of Science can be found at naturvetenskap.se (http://naturvetenskap.se).
Subject and Project Description
This position is linked to a large new project funded by the European Innovation Council: Picosecond-scale Photonic Heterogeneous Integrated Neuromorphic Detector (Phinder). The project will enable optical event detection and analysis at the picosecond scale with high throughput by manufacturing and demonstrating a dynamic photonic sensor array with neuromorphic intelligence on-chip. This is made possible by significantly advancing the latest technology in optoelectronic co-design of algorithms and hardware, as well as heterogeneous integration at multiple scales. A central goal of the work at Lund University is to manufacture neural nodes based on III-V nanowires that communicate at telecom wavelengths and function as sensors at varying wavelengths, as well as to verify final performance levels for spikes at picosecond and femtosecond energy levels. The project will be interdisciplinary and involve groups across Europe working on optoelectronic architecture, sensor geometries, and algorithms, as well as integration with advanced waveguide platforms.
General Study Plan for Doctoral Education
Job Responsibilities
You will primarily focus on your doctoral education, which mainly consists of writing a doctoral thesis. You are expected to participate in research projects, doctoral courses, seminars, and conferences.
The project is based on high-performance nanostructures developed for solar energy harvesting and LEDs and will use these to build artificial neural components that utilize light for connections and electrical signals for memory and signal analysis. You will work on developing and exploring the synthesis, processing, properties, and performance of nanowire-based devices for nanophotonic neuromorphic computing and optical sensing. Your work will include design, modeling, realization, and characterization of nanophotonic devices based on group III-V materials. The work will involve researchers from various scientific disciplines collaborating.
The position is located at the Department of Physics. Significant collaborations will occur within the large interdisciplinary environment of NanoLund (www.nano.lu.se (http://www.nano.lu.se)) and will involve many other students and researchers in the environment as well as in the European project Phinder. Participation in several doctoral schools (e.g., in nanoscience, experimental methods and analysis, and advanced microscopy) is offered.
In addition to your studies, a maximum of 20% of your working time may be devoted to teaching and other departmental work.
