PhD Candidate in Computer Science with a Focus on Detection and Reduction of Software Waste
Description of the Organization
The PhD candidate will be employed at the Department of Computer Science, within the Software Development and Environments unit.
This unit focuses on the development and evaluation of new technical designs of tools and programming languages for software development, as well as the usage and user experience of such tools and programming languages. The scientific methods used in this unit range from programming language design and benchmarking to empirical research in software development and interaction design. Research is often conducted in collaboration between industry and academia within interdisciplinary initiatives, where the PhD candidate can carry out their studies.
This position is specifically funded within ELLIIT's strategic research area (Excellence Center at Linköping – Lund in Information Technology) where another PhD candidate will address the same topic but in a different software development context. The PhD candidate will also be affiliated with the industrial competence center NEXTG2COM, within the research theme Software Platforms and Continuous Engineering.

Being a PhD Candidate
As a PhD candidate, you are both admitted as a student and employed at Lund University.
As a research student, you are trained in a scientific approach. This can be briefly described as gaining practice in critical and analytical thinking, solving problems independently with the help of appropriate methodological choices, and developing research ethics awareness. Additionally, you will have the opportunity as a PhD candidate to work on projects, develop your leadership skills, and enhance your pedagogical abilities. Throughout your studies, you will be guided by supervisors. Research studies conclude with a dissertation and a doctoral degree.

Subject and Project Description
The research education subject is computer science with a focus on software technology that supports the development of complex software systems from a sustainability perspective. Large-scale development of complex software systems, for example, cloud-edge systems, micro-service architectures, or critical cyber-physical systems increasingly relies on automation and simulation to enhance productivity and quality. AI assistance based on large language models is actively used for partial automation of tasks such as writing program code (e.g., Co-pilot, ChatGPT), quality control, and code review. Furthermore, AI-driven assistance is integrated into the tool stack for Development and Operations (DevOps) of software-intensive systems to continuously collect data throughout the software lifecycle. In large-scale cloud-edge services, DevOps includes many collaborating tools (e.g., build services, code review, program analysis) to provide information about the impact of integration changes and operational data to groups of software developers. In complex software development of this kind, there is a risk of Software Waste, e.g., when developers wait for DevOps results, when unnecessary results are calculated, or when overly large AI models are used to compute results that smaller models could handle instead. The goal of this project is to investigate how Software Waste can be detected and reduced within AI-assisted DevOps for complex software systems, focusing on cloud-edge systems.
Responsibilities
You will primarily devote yourself to your research education, which includes participation in research projects as well as research education courses, seminars, and conferences. Since the project is conducted within the frameworks of the ELLIIT and NEXTG2COM research programs, you will collaborate with corresponding academic and industrial partners.
Your responsibilities include:
- Research within the project's subject framework
- Collaboration with partners in ELLIIT and NEXTG2COM
- Participation in international research conferences
- Conducting courses at the doctoral level
- Participation in teaching and other departmental work (max 20% of working time).
