Postdoctoral Researcher in Atmospheric Aerosol Research
Lund University was founded in 1666 and is consistently ranked as one of the world's leading universities. There are about 46,000 students and 8,500 employees in Lund, Helsingborg, and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain, and improve our world and the conditions of humanity.
Workplace Description
The position is at the Department of Combustion Physics at Lund University.
The Aerosol Research Group studies atmospheric aerosol particles and their impact on climate and air quality using in-situ and satellite measurements, process modeling, and global modeling. The group is part of the strategic research area MERGE (https://www.merge.lu.se (https://www.merge.lu.se)) focusing on climate modeling. Aerosol research has been conducted in Lund since the 1970s and is today a prominent research area at LTH (https://www.lth.se/english/research/profile-areas/aerosols/ (https://www.lth.se/english/research/profile-areas/aerosols/)).
The department has about 70 employees and is located in the Enoch Thulin Laboratory at the Department of Physics. We actively promote a friendly and supportive work environment, with a social committee that organizes activities such as game nights and excursions.
The postdoctoral researcher will be affiliated with the ACTRIS and ICOS infrastructures for atmospheric and ecosystem science via the field stations Hyltemossa and Norunda in Sweden, and will work closely with station staff and colleagues conducting scientific projects.
The position is funded through a MERGE initiative to utilize measurement data to clarify how different ecosystems affect the properties of aerosol particles and their climate effects. The project investigates how meteorological conditions and biosphere-atmosphere exchanges influence aerosol levels and climate, and whether these sensitivities are represented in aerosol process models, earth system models, and dynamic vegetation models. The work is closely linked to the Horizon Europe project CLIMB-FOREST, which aims to better understand the climate effects of forests through short-lived climate forcers (SLCF).
Specific Subject Description
The subject of the position is research on data regarding atmospheric aerosol particles.
Job Responsibilities
The main responsibilities of the postdoctoral researcher include conducting research. Teaching may also be included in the responsibilities, but no more than one-fifth of the working time. Within the framework of the position, there is an opportunity for three weeks of higher education pedagogical training. The purpose of the position is to develop independence as a researcher and create conditions for further qualification.
You will work with long time series of aerosol data from the field stations Hyltemossa and Norunda to identify relationships between aerosol properties and their land-use origins or meteorological parameters. This is done by tracing aerosols to sources with meteorological trajectories or through source allocation with source/receptor models and machine learning tools. Analyzed data includes trace gases such as volatile organic compounds, particle number and mass concentrations, chemistry, biological particles, cloud and ice cores, light scattering and absorption, and black carbon.
Several years of aerosol dynamical and Lagrangian box model simulations, including runs with modified land use and aerosol process representations, are analyzed together with data from earth system models. The postdoctoral researcher will assess the sensitivity of modeled volatile organic compounds, aerosol properties, and processes to land use changes, evaluate model performance, and suggest updated parameterizations when warranted. The postdoctoral researcher will not run or develop models or conduct new measurements. Responsibilities also include writing scientific publications related to the research. You are expected to participate in project meetings and present results at scientific conferences.
Qualifications
Eligible for employment as a postdoctoral researcher is someone who has obtained a doctoral degree, or a foreign degree deemed equivalent to a doctoral degree, in the subject area of the position. Proof of meeting the eligibility requirement must be submitted no later than at the time the employment decision is made. Primarily, the applicant in question must have obtained their degree no more than three years before the application deadline. If there are special reasons, the doctoral degree may have been obtained earlier.
Other requirements:
- Very good oral and written English.
- Good knowledge of aerosols.
