Postdoctoral Researcher in Cholestatic Liver Diseases

The University of Gothenburg meets societal challenges with versatile knowledge. 56,000 students and 6,600 employees make the university a large and inspiring workplace. Strong research and attractive education attract researchers and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University of Gothenburg contributes to a better future.

The Department of Medicine, Division of Molecular and Clinical Medicine, conducts translational research primarily on metabolism, diabetes, liver, obesity, and cardiovascular disease to improve health and healthcare in society. The overarching goal is to create an excellent translational research environment of very high international standard.

Cholestatic liver diseases are a group of chronic liver diseases characterized by reduced bile flow from the liver (cholestasis). The etiology and pathophysiology behind cholestatic liver diseases are still not fully understood. In recent years, several studies have shown that an environmental factor, gut bacteria, is involved in the development of various liver diseases. Metabolites produced by gut bacteria from diet can affect liver function. In this project, we want to investigate whether changes in gut flora can lead to changes in metabolites and, ultimately, to the development of cholestatic liver diseases. We aim to study the role of metabolites in the development of inflammation and scar tissue (fibrosis) in bile ducts as seen in cholestatic liver diseases.

A long-term goal of the research is to identify the metabolites that are harmful to liver diseases and prevent their production by bacteria.

We hope you want to become part of our multidisciplinary research group. You are warmly welcome to apply!
