Job Responsibilities

The position of research engineer is focused on research and education.

The position includes training with a focus on supervising bachelor's and master's projects. Supervising students constitutes a large part of the job responsibilities. A smaller part of the position involves independent research within a project focusing on strong convex relaxations of nonlinear non-convex optimization problems.

Implementations and testing of algorithms are an important part of the project. The position is temporary and 70% of a full-time position.

You will work at the Department of Mathematics in the Optimization Theory and Systems Theory group. The project is led by university lecturer Jan Kronqvist.

Qualifications

Requirements

  • Completed degree at the undergraduate or advanced level (higher education) in the subject relevant to the position or equivalent competence.
  • Experience supervising student projects.
  • You have worked with mathematical optimization and have experience in linear/nonlinear optimization or mixed-integer optimization. You have published journal/conference articles focusing on mathematical optimization (either methods, theory, or applications of optimization).
  • Experience working with the programming language Python.
  • Documented experience of scientific competence, e.g., in the form of published articles.
  • Ability to work independently and collaborate with others.
  • Very good knowledge of English as it is required for daily work.

Meritorious

  • Experience in one or more of these areas: mixed-integer optimization, non-convex optimization, convex optimization, SDP, conic optimization, use of computer programs for optimization, programming, and tools such as Git.
  • Experience working with Python/Julia/C++ or similar.
  • Previous research in method/algorithm development.
  • Experience presenting research results at international conferences.
  • A problem-solving and numerical analytical ability is central to the role in successfully conducting research. The focus of the research is on methods and theory, but you should also have sufficient programming skills.
  • The work also consists largely of independent work, and the ability to work independently is therefore important. The role also involves collaboration with other researchers, and the ability to communicate effectively with others in the project is important.
  • We expect awareness of diversity and equality issues with a particular focus on gender equality.
  • Teaching ability.

We will place great emphasis on personal qualities.
