Project Description
Research Subject: Technical Materials Science
A project funded by Vinnova, “Extension of the lifespan of refractory materials and elimination of fluorspar in the AOD process” (REFLAOD), aims to eliminate the use of fluorspar in the production of stainless steel.
The goal is to increase material resilience, extend the lifespan of refractory materials, and enable higher recycling rates of slag from stainless steel. The doctoral candidate will work closely with industry experts to develop a fluorspar-free AOD process, balancing various factors such as steel quality, refractory wear, and raw material costs. The candidate will utilize thermodynamic tools (e.g., Thermo-Calc) for process design and conduct high-temperature experiments to verify calculations. The position offers a comprehensive learning experience in conducting research with high industrial and academic relevance, as well as in driving process development, strengthening the skills required for both an academic and industrial career after graduation.
Supervision: Dr. Mikael Ersson is proposed as the supervisor for the doctoral candidate. Decisions will be made upon admission.
Eligibility for Admission
To be admitted to doctoral studies (Chapter 7, Section 39 of the Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility:
