To support the transition towards smarter and more sustainable energy systems in buildings, the ALTBESS project, funded by the Swedish Energy Agency, focuses on further developing the operation of battery energy storage systems (BESS) in buildings integrated with photovoltaic systems (PV).

The project investigates how data-driven methods and advanced optimization can improve battery performance while explicitly considering aging effects. The project is based on real case studies and combines simulation, optimization, and operational data.

The PhD candidate will develop aging models for batteries tailored to the project's case studies using transfer learning and data-driven methods, integrate the aging models into existing optimization and scheduling frameworks to enable aging-aware battery operation, and compile the developed models into a user-friendly software package for researchers and practitioners. The position offers an opportunity to work at the intersection of AI, energy system optimization, and battery technology in an applied research environment with both academic and industrial collaboration.

Supervision

Dr. Farzin Golzar is proposed to supervise the PhD candidate. A decision will be made upon admission.

Eligibility for Admission

To be admitted to doctoral education (Chapter 7, Section 39 of the Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility:

• completed a master's degree, or
• completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at the master's level, or
• acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way, within or outside the country.

Completed courses or equivalent education in energy systems and optimization methods are required according to the eligibility requirements for doctoral education. Interest in or experience in areas such as machine learning, data analysis, battery modeling, sector coupling, and optimization methods is considered meritorious.

Information on Admission and Employment

Only those who have been admitted to doctoral education may be employed as PhD candidates. The total employment period may not exceed the equivalent of full-time doctoral education for four years. An employed PhD candidate may, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), perform certain tasks within, for example, education and administration. A new employment as a PhD candidate is valid for a maximum of one year, and the employment may thereafter be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time. For studies concluding with a licentiate degree, the total employment period may not exceed the equivalent of full-time doctoral education for two years.
