Project Description

Doctoral Subject: Technical Mechanics

KTH (https://www.kth.se/tekmek/institutionen-for-teknisk-mekanik-1.1204789) conducts fundamental and applied research in biomechanics, composite mechanics, fluid mechanics, contact mechanics, fracture mechanics, and fatigue, material mechanics, and paper mechanics. Flow (https://www.flow.kth.se/) is a strong community of researchers engaged in fundamental and applied research in fluid mechanics within the department.

We are currently seeking a PhD candidate in fluid mechanics to join the Department of Fluid Mechanics at KTH. This position offers an opportunity to contribute to a research program focused on multi-scale urban turbulence and gust dynamics.

The project aims to explore the fundamental mechanisms behind fine-scale, intermittent turbulence phenomena in urban environments, which are crucial for applications such as drone safety, pedestrian comfort, and urban wind energy. By integrating artificial intelligence with advanced wind tunnel experiments, the PhD candidate will work on understanding and predicting urban turbulence patterns. The goal is to develop frameworks that can inform urban planning, renewable energy strategies, and drone operations, thereby addressing critical challenges in sustainable urban development.

Eligibility for Admission

To be admitted to doctoral education (Chapter 7, Section 39 of the Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility:

  • completed a master's degree, or
  • completed course requirements of at least 240 ECTS credits, of which at least 60 ECTS credits at the master's level, or
  • acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way, within or outside the country.

Selection

To succeed in your doctoral studies at KTH, you need to be goal-oriented and persistent in your work. In the selection of applicants, the ability to:

  • independently drive your work forward,
  • collaborate with others,
  • maintain a professional approach, and
  • analyze and work with complex issues.
  • Experience with experimental flow measurement methods such as hot-wire anemometry, laser Doppler anemometry, or particle image velocimetry is advantageous.
  • Experience with machine learning is advantageous.

After the eligibility requirements, significant weight will be given to personal characteristics.

Only those admitted to doctoral education may be employed as PhD candidates. The total employment period may not exceed what corresponds to full-time doctoral education for four years. An employed PhD candidate may, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), perform certain tasks within e.g., education and administration. A new employment as a PhD candidate is valid for a maximum of one year, and the employment may then be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time. For studies concluding with a licentiate degree, the total employment period may not exceed what corresponds to full-time doctoral education for two years.
