Project Description
Research Subject: Human-Computer Interaction
The School of KTH (https://www.kth.se/eecs/skolan-for-elektroteknik-och-datavetenskap-1.760855) announces a full-time position for a PhD student in human-computer interaction with a focus on augmented reality. The main task is to conduct research and development within an EU project (ARISE (https://28digital.eu/eu-collaborations/arise)). ARISE aims to train the next generation of specialists and innovators in human-computer interaction and design with a focus on augmented reality (XR) in Europe. ARISE will achieve this goal by designing and delivering a master's program with a double degree (ISCED level 7, 120 ECTS) in human-computer interaction (HCI) and augmented reality, as well as a minor in innovation and entrepreneurship.
We invite highly motivated candidates with an interest in international collaboration to work on the development of the new master's program, as well as to develop augmented reality systems in a user-centered manner to collaborate in our research group and to be trained as an expert in human-computer interaction with augmented reality. More specifically, the PhD student will create various XR experiences and evaluate them with users for education and industry.
The student is expected to produce research results with open access to peer-reviewed conferences and journals. The PhD student will also be able to develop project management skills for international projects.
Supervision: Professor Jan Gulliksen and Associate Professor Andrii Matviienko are proposed to supervise the PhD students. Decisions will be made at admission.
Eligibility for Admission
To be admitted to doctoral education (Chapter 7, Section 39 of the Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility:
- completed a master's degree, or
- completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at the master's level, or
- acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way, either domestically or abroad.

Selection
To succeed in your doctoral studies at KTH, you need to be goal-oriented and persistent in your work. In the selection of applicants, the ability to:
- independently drive your work forward,
- collaborate with others,
- maintain a professional attitude, and
- analyze and work with complex issues.
- demonstrate experience in pedagogical development, and
- show the ability to work in an interdisciplinary environment and collaborate with various colleagues.
The ideal candidate has a master's degree in computer science and good knowledge and experience in several of the following areas: human-computer interaction, augmented reality (XR), design and implementation of experiments with users, and statistical analysis. He/she demonstrates good programming skills, basic knowledge of AI, and the ability to create mixed reality applications.
After the eligibility requirements, great importance will be placed on personal qualities.

Only those who have been admitted to doctoral education may be employed as PhD students. The total employment period may not exceed what corresponds to full-time doctoral education for four years. An employed PhD student may, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), perform certain tasks within, for example, education and administration. A new employment as a PhD student is valid for a maximum of one year, and the employment may then be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time. For studies concluding with a licentiate degree, the total employment period may not exceed what corresponds to full-time doctoral education for two years.
