Research Subject: Energy Technology

Do you want to contribute to Sweden's capabilities regarding jet engines? To develop a resilient Swedish aerospace ecosystem, a jet engine demonstrator is being established in the industry to validate new technologies, concepts, and methods at the system level.

This research project concerns inlet distortions to jet engines and characterization of distortion patterns. Specifically, intake distortion is studied in a lab environment, aerodynamically, to further develop a distortion generator and measurement module for characterization of distortion patterns for advanced air intakes. The developed modules will later be implemented in the jet engine demonstrator in the industry. An overarching goal of the project is also to increase national competence in propulsion (jet engine technology).

This research project is in close collaboration with the industry and is funded by Vinnova through the national aviation research program, NFFP.

Supervision: Jens Fridh is proposed to supervise the doctoral student. A decision will be made upon admission.

Eligibility for Admission

To be admitted to doctoral education (Chapter 7, Section 39 of the Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility:

• completed a degree at an advanced level, or
• fulfilled course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at an advanced level, or
• acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way, within or outside the country.

Due to the intended application of the research results and the close industry collaboration, there is a requirement for Swedish citizenship for those who are admitted. The position is classified for security, see further under Other.

Selection

To succeed in your doctoral studies at KTH, you need to be goal-oriented and persistent in your work. In the selection of applicants, the ability to:

• independently drive your work forward,
• collaborate with others,
• have a professional approach, and
• analyze and work with complex issues.
• Experience in experimental work within fluid mechanics and/or turbomachinery is meritorious.

After the eligibility requirements, great emphasis will be placed on personal qualities.

Information about Admission and Employment

Only those who have been admitted to doctoral education may be employed as doctoral students. The total employment period may not exceed what corresponds to full-time doctoral education for four years. An employed doctoral student may, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), perform certain tasks within e.g. education and administration. A new employment as a doctoral student is valid for a maximum of one year, and the employment may thereafter be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time. For studies that will conclude with a licentiate degree, the total employment period may not exceed what corresponds to full-time doctoral education for two years.
