PhD Subject: Applied Physics

The Department of Light and Matter Physics conducts fundamental and applied research across a wide range of scientific areas, including quantum and topological materials.

The successful candidate will be part of the Quantum Technology & Materials group, focusing on synthesis, materials engineering, and characterization of quantum materials, from superconductors to magnetic systems exhibiting topological spin textures and emergent quasi-particles. The group combines experimental capabilities in its own laboratories with experiments at large-scale research facilities and maintains strong, long-term collaborations with theoretical physicists. The research engineer will contribute to an interdisciplinary research program aimed at bridging topological spin textures and neuromorphic functionality, with a particular focus on material platforms relevant for components and engineered interfaces.

Main Responsibilities:

The work will focus on the construction and characterization of heterostructures and interfaces based on transition metal compounds and low-dimensional magnetic materials, with the goal of exploiting their spin textures for neuromorphic information processing. You will design, fabricate, and optimize material systems, conduct advanced experimental characterization using both local laboratory techniques and large-scale research facilities, and perform quantitative data analysis.

Associate Prof. Yasmine Sassa is proposed to supervise the PhD student. Decisions will be made upon admission.

Eligibility for Admission

To be admitted to doctoral education (Chapter 7, Section 39 of the Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility:

• completed a degree at the advanced level, or
• fulfilled course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at the advanced level, or
• acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way, within or outside the country.

Selection

To succeed in your doctoral studies at KTH, you need to be goal-oriented and persistent in your work. In the selection of applicants, the ability to:

• independently drive your work forward,
• collaborate with others,
• maintain a professional attitude, and
• analyze and work with complex issues.
• Experience with clean rooms, knowledge of sputtering deposition techniques, and thin film characterization is recommended.

After the eligibility requirements, great importance will be placed on personal qualities.

Information on Admission and Employment

Only those who have been admitted to doctoral education may be employed as doctoral students. The total employment period may not exceed what corresponds to full-time doctoral education for four years. An employed doctoral student may, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), perform certain tasks in, for example, education and administration. A new employment as a doctoral student is valid for a maximum of one year, after which the employment may be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time.
