Project Description
PhD Subject: Materials Science
The Department of Materials Science is seeking a PhD candidate in material characterization and the development of understanding the structure-property relationships in advanced high-strength steels (AHSS) with a focus on fatigue properties of thick plates of AHSS for the heavy vehicle industry.
With the growing demand for sustainable material solutions to reduce carbon emissions in the automotive industry, AHSS emerges as the most cost-effective option to achieve lightweight design, especially in heavy vehicles. Considering that structural components in such vehicles are primarily subjected to dynamic loading, fatigue performance becomes a critical factor in material and component design. In the manufacturing of chassis components, shearing processes such as hole punching are important processes and significantly affect the fatigue properties of the steel. Despite the significant importance of AHSS and shearing processes in the manufacturing of these, the relationship between microstructure, shearing processes, and the mechanisms for the initiation and propagation of fatigue cracks is not well understood. Therefore, the overall goal of the project is to develop fatigue-optimized AHSS solutions for dynamically loaded vehicle components. This involves an in-depth understanding of microstructures and mechanical properties to design the steels to meet the requirements for both high static strength and improved fatigue performance. The project will be conducted within the Center for Mechanics and Material Design (MMD) and the Steel4Fatigue project in collaboration with academic and industrial partners.
Supervision: Peter Hedström and Mohammad Hoseini Athar are proposed to supervise the PhD candidate. Decisions will be made upon admission.
