Research Subject: Electronic Systems

KTH is seeking a PhD candidate to develop a robust framework for VLSI design named SiLago (Silicon Lego).

The fundamental idea behind SiLago is composition through abutment, enabling the construction of designs that are inherently free from timing and DRC-related errors. The framework will also serve as a foundation for exploring the design space (Design Space Exploration, DSE) at the algorithm, application, and system levels. The SiLago framework is part of several EU-funded and national research projects. This PhD position is linked to a project funded by IMEC as part of the CMOS 2.0 consortium, which consists of several leading universities in Europe.

Supervision: Professor Ahmed Hemani is proposed to supervise the PhD candidate. A decision will be made upon admission.

Eligibility for Admission

To be admitted to doctoral education (Chapter 7, Section 39 of the Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility:

• completed a master’s degree in electrical engineering or computer science/computer engineering, or
• completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at the advanced level, or
• acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way, within or outside the country.

- Good knowledge in the design and verification of digital systems in HDL
- Strong background in computer architecture
- Good knowledge of EDA tools for logical and physical synthesis, full custom design, circuit-level design, as well as analysis and simulation in SPICE
- Applicants must not already hold a doctoral degree at the time of recruitment
- Good communication and presentation skills, as well as very good knowledge of English in both spoken and written form, as this is required in daily work.
- Good collaboration skills, self-motivation, and creativity

Information on Admission and Employment

Only those who have been admitted to doctoral education may be employed as PhD candidates. The total employment period may not exceed what corresponds to full-time doctoral education for four years. An employed PhD candidate may, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), perform certain tasks within, e.g., education and administration. A new employment as a PhD candidate is valid for a maximum of one year, after which the employment may be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time. For studies that will conclude with a licentiate degree, the total employment period may not exceed what corresponds to full-time doctoral education for two years.
