PhD Subject: Transport Science with a focus on transport systems

The transition towards sustainable mobility requires both a deep understanding of behavioral dynamics and robust forecasting tools that can predict future changes in car ownership and emissions.

The overall goal of the research project is to develop a comprehensive framework that integrates behavioral theory, deep learning, xAI, and resilience analysis to understand how infrastructural interventions affect mode choice and transport emissions. This is part of a larger European project where measures will be designed and implemented with a priority on public transport in several municipalities, including mobility and service hubs to promote intermodal travel.

The main activities include method development with literature reviews, data collection and analysis, model validation, and stress testing. Empirical results will be documented in scientific publications and disseminated to stakeholders outside the project partners and academia. The PhD candidate will collaborate with other PhD students in the research group to further develop existing accessibility indices, agent-based simulations, and models for forecasting transport demand.

Supervision: Fariya Sharmeen is proposed to supervise the PhD candidate. A decision will be made upon admission.

Eligibility for Admission

To be admitted to doctoral education (Chapter 7, Section 39 of the Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility:

• completed a degree at an advanced level, or
• completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at an advanced level, or
• acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way, within or outside the country.

Selection

To succeed in your doctoral studies at KTH, you need to be goal-oriented and persistent in your work. In the selection of applicants, the ability to:

• independently drive your work forward,
• collaborate with others,
• have a professional approach, and
• analyze and work with complex issues.
• a relevant educational background, such as applied mathematics, transport science, computer science, machine learning, AI,
• documented programming skills, for example, to calculate machine learning and xAI,
• collect data from databases with open sources, from social media,
• understand theory-driven models, e.g., modeling of activity trips,
• effectively formulate research questions and creatively seek solutions,
• work effectively in a multidisciplinary international team,
• communication skills in English as required in daily work.

Highly desirable:

• documented experience and skill in quantitative analysis
• interest in integrated models to facilitate complex decision-making processes
• critical thinking

After the eligibility requirements, great importance will be placed on personal qualities.

Information on Admission and Employment

Only those who have been admitted to doctoral education may be employed as PhD candidates. The total employment period may not exceed what corresponds to full-time doctoral education for four years. An employed PhD candidate may, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), perform certain tasks within, for example, education and administration. A new employment as a PhD candidate is valid for a maximum of one year, and the employment may then be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time. For studies that will conclude with a licentiate degree, the total employment period may not exceed what corresponds to full-time doctoral education for two years.
