Project Description

Research Subject: Computer Science

We welcome applications from talented and highly motivated candidates for a PhD in machine learning.

The successful candidate will be supervised by Professor Aristides Gionis (profile (https://www.kth.se/profile/argioni/)). The research group focuses on developing new methods for extracting knowledge from data, modeling large-scale complex systems, and exploring new application areas within computer science. Areas of interest include but are not limited to models and algorithms for knowledge discovery, new algorithmic and statistical techniques for big data management, optimization for machine learning, information and social network analysis, fairness, accountability, and transparency in learning systems.

Applicants must have a master's degree in science at the time of admission. Successful candidates should be highly self-motivated and committed to publishing and presenting high-quality research. A solid background in algorithm design, machine learning, and optimization is essential, along with strong programming and implementation skills. The advertised position is funded by the Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP), Sweden's largest individual research program ever, a major national initiative for strategically motivated basic research, education, and faculty recruitment. The program focuses on research on artificial intelligence and autonomous systems that act in collaboration with humans, adapt to their environment through sensors, information, and knowledge, and form intelligent systems-of-systems. WASP's vision is excellent research and competence in artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, and software for the benefit of Swedish industry.

Supervision: Professor Aristides Gionis is proposed to supervise the doctoral student. Decisions are made upon admission.

Eligibility for Admission

To be admitted to doctoral education (Chapter 7, Section 39 of the Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility:

  • completed a degree at the advanced level, or
  • completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at the advanced level, or
  • acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way, within or outside the country.

Selection

To succeed in your doctoral studies at KTH, you need to be goal-oriented and persistent in your work. In the selection of applicants, the ability to:

  • independently drive your work forward,
  • collaborate with others,
  • have a professional approach, and
  • analyze and work with complex issues.
  • Applicants must have or be on their way to obtaining a master's degree in computer science, machine learning, AI, computer science, or a related field.
  • Applicants must have strong academic merits, as demonstrated by excellence in courses or relevant projects.

After the eligibility requirements, great importance will be placed on personal qualities.

Information on Admission and Employment

Only those who have been admitted to doctoral education may be employed as doctoral students. The total employment period may not exceed what corresponds to full-time doctoral education for four years. An employed doctoral student may, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), perform certain tasks within, e.g., education and administration. A new employment as a doctoral student is valid for a maximum of one year, after which the employment may be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time. For studies that will conclude with a licentiate degree, the total employment period may not exceed what corresponds to full-time doctoral education for two years.
