Project Description

Research Subject: Historical Studies of Technology, Science, and Environment

We are looking for someone who wants to write a dissertation on the history of governance in polar regions.

Proposals focusing on Antarctica, non-Western perspectives on polar regions, bi-polar similarities, or source material in languages other than English are particularly welcome. Your dissertation can encompass any theoretical tradition but must fit into one of the three fields covered by the program: environmental history, history of technology, or history of science. The dissertation may address both land and sea, as well as studies of the role of non-state actors in the governance of polar regions.

This doctoral position is part of SEAL (https://www.gu.se/seal), which offers doctoral students a world-leading educational environment spanning natural sciences, engineering, law, and humanities, with a strong emphasis on stakeholder engagement and science diplomacy. Within SEAL, you will have the opportunity to participate in field courses alongside doctoral students from natural science disciplines from Sweden and abroad. A successful candidate must therefore be open to interdisciplinary learning and collaboration.

Supervision: Kati Lindström is proposed to supervise the doctoral student. A decision will be made upon admission.

Eligibility for Admission

To be admitted to doctoral education (Chapter 7, Section 39 of the Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility:

  • completed a degree at an advanced level, or
  • completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at an advanced level, or
  • acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way, within or outside the country.
  • demonstrate the ability to independently write a longer scientific text within the subject area.

Selection

To succeed in your doctoral studies at KTH, you need to be goal-oriented and persistent in your work. In the selection of applicants, the ability to:

  • independently drive your work forward,
  • collaborate with others,
  • maintain a professional attitude, and
  • analyze and work with complex issues.
  • fluent knowledge of a language other than English that is relevant to the polar region in question.
  • openness to interdisciplinary research.

After the eligibility requirements, great importance will be placed on personal qualities.

Information on Admission and Employment

Only those who have been admitted to doctoral education may be employed as doctoral students. The total employment period must not exceed what corresponds to full-time doctoral education for four years. An employed doctoral student may, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), perform certain tasks within, e.g., education and administration. A new employment as a doctoral student is valid for a maximum of one year, after which the employment may be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time. For studies concluding with a licentiate degree, the total employment period must not exceed what corresponds to full-time doctoral education for two years.
