Project Description
PhD Subject: Computer Science
We welcome applications from talented and highly motivated candidates to pursue a PhD in Machine Learning at KTH, Sweden and NTU, Singapore.
This is a fully funded, joint PhD position leading to a joint degree awarded by KTH and NTU. The successful candidate will be supervised by Professor Aristides Gionis (KTH), Associate Professor Kelly Ke Yiping (NTU), and Assistant Professor Sebastian Dalleiger (KTH). The PhD candidate will be recruited and formally registered at KTH, and will spend at least 12 months at NTU in Singapore as part of the joint program.
The research project is primarily focused on machine learning. Potential research topics include, but are not limited to, algorithmic knowledge discovery, graph mining and social network analysis, optimization for machine learning, representation learning, and fair, responsible, and transparent machine learning.
Applicants must have a master's degree at the time of registration. Successful candidates should be highly self-motivated and committed to publishing and presenting high-quality research. A solid background in algorithm design, machine learning, and optimization is essential, along with strong programming and implementation skills.
Supervision
Aristides Gionis (KTH), Sebastian Dalleiger (KTH), Kelly Ke Yiping (NTU) are proposed to supervise the PhD candidate. Decisions will be made at the time of admission.
Eligibility for Admission
To be admitted to doctoral studies (Chapter 7 Section 39 of the Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility:
- completed a degree at an advanced level, or
- completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at an advanced level, or
- acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way, within or outside the country.

Selection
To succeed in your doctoral studies at KTH, you need to be goal-oriented and persistent in your work. In the selection of applicants, the ability to:
- independently drive your work forward,
- collaborate with others,
- maintain a professional attitude, and
- analyze and work with complex issues will be assessed.
- Applicants must have or be on track to obtain a master's degree in computer science, machine learning, AI, data science, or a related field.
- Applicants must have strong academic credentials, demonstrated through excellent courses or relevant projects.
After the eligibility requirements, significant weight will be placed on personal qualities.
Target Degree: PhD
Information on Admission and Employment
Only those admitted to doctoral studies may be employed as PhD candidates. The total employment period may not exceed the equivalent of full-time doctoral education for four years. An employed PhD candidate may, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), perform certain tasks within e.g. education and administration. A new employment as a PhD candidate is valid for a maximum of one year, and the employment may thereafter be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time. For studies that will conclude with a licentiate degree, the total employment period may not exceed the equivalent of full-time doctoral education for two years.
