Project Description

Research Subject: Civil Engineering, specializing in Soil and Rock Mechanics

We are looking for a PhD candidate for the Department of Soil and Rock Mechanics (https://www.byv.kth.se/avd/jord-o-bergmekanik) who wants to contribute to the climate adaptation of society's infrastructure. This fully funded 4-year position is part of an innovative, interdisciplinary research project focused on developing sustainable solutions for climate adaptation of geotechnical structures. The project is of great practical significance and is expected to make a difference in society's climate transition. As a PhD candidate, you will work closely with both geotechnical engineers and risk philosophers to study how uncertainties related to future climate change affect the safety of geotechnical structures. In the project, you will:

  • Explore how uncertainty in climate-related parameters affects the suitability of various geotechnical solutions.
  • Perform calculations and analyses to create cost-effective and sustainable technical solutions, as well as develop and test models for decision-making under deep uncertainty.
  • Work on case studies that link research to real geotechnical structures.

Through close collaboration with experienced supervisors and an open and supportive work environment, you will have the opportunity to grow and develop specialized knowledge for a future career in industry or academia.

Supervision: geotechnical risk management (https://www.kth.se/profile/spross), risk philosophy (https://www.kth.se/profile/perwi), and geotechnics (https://www.kth.se/profile/stelar) are suggested to supervise the PhD candidate. Decisions will be made upon admission.

Eligibility for Admission

To be admitted to doctoral education (Chapter 7, Section 39 of the Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility:

  • completed a master's degree, or
  • completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at the master's level, or
  • acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way, within or outside the country.

The studies at the master's level should include geotechnics, other civil engineering subjects, or engineering physics, e.g., as part of a degree in civil engineering or engineering physics.

In addition to the above, there is also a requirement for eligibility (https://www.kth.se/studies/phd/entry-requirements-for-doctoral-studies-1.520175).

Selection

To succeed in your doctoral studies at KTH, you need to be goal-oriented and persistent in your work. In the selection of applicants, the ability to:

  • independently drive your work forward,
  • collaborate with others,
  • maintain a professional attitude, and
  • analyze and work with complex issues will be assessed.

Experience working as a practicing geotechnical engineer is advantageous, as well as knowledge in statistics and risk and safety analysis, and programming. The applicant must be proficient in English, both spoken and written, and have good academic grades.

After the eligibility requirements, great importance will be placed on personal qualities.

Target Degree: PhD
