GIH hereby announces a doctoral position in the subject of Sports Science within the area of running biomechanics.
Project Description:
The project aims to increase the understanding of how running shoes with so-called Advanced Footwear Technology (AFT, or "super shoes") affect the runner's performance and injury mechanisms at the individual level. Through advanced biomechanical methods, the shoe's effect on the dynamic function of the foot and lower extremity during running will be calculated, and opportunities for individual customization of the shoes will be investigated.
Eligibility for Postgraduate Studies
To be admitted to postgraduate studies in Sports Science, the applicant must have:
- completed a degree at the advanced level, fulfilled course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at the advanced level, or otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge within or outside the country;
- the ability otherwise needed to complete the education.
Upper secondary school grades equivalent to English 6 are a basic requirement. For applicants who do not have grades from a Swedish upper secondary school, a certificate of eligibility equivalent to English 6 from an internationally recognized language test (TOEFL, IELTS, or Cambridge ESOL) is required in accordance with the requirements at antagning.se: https://www.universityadmissions.se/en/All-you-need-to-know1/Applying-for-studies/English-requirements/ (https://www.universityadmissions.se/en/All-you-need-to-know1/Applying-for-studies/English-requirements/). Any exemptions from the certificate requirement are regulated at http://www.universityadmissions.se (http://www.universityadmissions.se). Applicants with a master's degree from an English-speaking university or program do not need to show proof of an English language test.
The basic eligibility must be met at the time of admission to doctoral studies, no later than August 31, 2026.
Application
The application for admission must contain the following certified documents in pdf format:
- Degree certificate or other documents proving eligibility. A copy of the degree certificate must be attached in the original language as well as in an English translation by an authorized translator (does not apply to Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, English). If the studies are not completed at the time of application, the applicant must also attach a certificate issued by the educational provider stating the expected graduation date;
- Certificate of eligibility equivalent to English 6 from an internationally recognized language test: TOEFL, IELTS, ESOL (applies to applicants who do not have grades from a Swedish upper secondary school or a master's degree from an English-speaking university or program);
- Advanced level thesis (master's thesis). Accepted languages are Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, English;
- CV with a short written motivation for the application based on educational background;
- Proposal for at least two references.

Selection
Selection among applicants is made with regard to the ability to benefit from postgraduate studies. An important basis for assessment is the focus on higher education credits at the advanced level as well as the quality of independent work at the advanced level. The assessment is based on the following established criteria:
- familiarity with prior knowledge relevant to the dissertation subject within the area of sport, physical activity, and health, with emphasis on running biomechanics;
- theoretical awareness and familiarity with adequate methods;
- analytical ability;
- ability for critical thinking and problem formulation;
- written and oral communicative ability; and
- familiarity with ethical issues.
For this doctoral position, the following are also considered:
- extensive experience in data analysis and programming, and thus experience with software such as SPSS, QTM, Visual 3D, Theia, machine learning, Matlab, and Python;
- knowledge in mathematics, physics, or equivalent required for understanding the biomechanics relevant to the project;
- personal suitability for the position, such as commitment, efficiency, accuracy, responsibility, and ability to structure one's work and meet deadlines, as well as organizing and working in a group in a laboratory environment;
- practical experience from conducting data collection in research projects within biomechanics using methods such as treadmills with 3D force measurement, force plates, motion analysis systems, strength measurement, IMU, and initiative for new methods;
- experience from applying research data to sports through, e.g., collaboration with sports federations, etc.;
- experience from scientific writing and publication in peer-reviewed international scientific journals.
Admission and Employment
Regulations for entry into postgraduate studies are regulated in Chapter 7 of the Higher Education Ordinance as well as in GIH's admission regulations.
