Subject Description

Interaction design is an interdisciplinary research field that combines design research, social and behavioral sciences, and computer science. A key area of focus explores how humans experience and use interactive technologies through the body, materials, and physical environments, utilizing sketching and prototyping with hardware, materials, and software as central research methods. This encompasses immersive technologies and mixed reality alongside other concrete, physical interfaces.

Responsibilities

The main duties of the Assistant Professor include research, teaching, and supervision at the undergraduate, advanced, and doctoral levels. Course topics include interaction design, embodied interaction, immersive and mixed reality interaction, design methods, and prototyping.

The incumbent is expected to strengthen the scientific content and practical relevance of the education in the field of embodied interaction design.

The majority of the research will cover research in embodied interaction design, resulting in academic publications and research contributions such as artifacts, methods, or tools.

The employment is divided between 55 percent research and 45 percent teaching of full-time equivalent.

Qualifications

Eligible for appointment as an Assistant Professor is one who has completed a PhD in Computer and Systems Sciences with a specialization in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) or Interaction Design, or has equivalent scientific competence. Preference is given to those who have completed their PhD or achieved equivalent competence no more than seven years prior to the application date for the Assistant Professor position. However, those who have completed their PhD or achieved equivalent competence earlier may also be considered if there are special reasons. Special reasons include leave due to illness, parental leave, or other similar circumstances.

The applicant must possess both the ability to collaborate and the general aptitude and suitability required to perform the duties of the position well.

To perform the duties of the employment, the applicant must have documented proficiency in using English at a professional level in both speech and writing. This is demonstrated, for example, through documented experience teaching in English or a certificate of language skills equivalent to at least B2 level (CEFR).

Evaluation Criteria

Special weight is given to scientific proficiency in interaction design with a focus on embodied interaction design through research-through-design.

Significant weight is given to pedagogical proficiency, typically demonstrated through own teaching at undergraduate and advanced levels within the field. The teaching should have included pedagogical development regarding design projects and experiments for students. The pedagogical proficiency must be well-documented in a way that allows for an assessment of the quality of the pedagogical activities.

Significant weight is given to a well-developed plan for research during the period of employment.

Significant weight is given to documented ability to collaborate with colleagues.

Significant weight is also given to documented experience working with hardware, physical materials, and prototyping techniques in research environments or within industry.

Weight is given to successfully planning, applying for, and obtaining grants from external funders.

Weight is given to administrative proficiency and the ability to interact with the surrounding society and to inform about research and development work.

Meritorious is higher education pedagogy education of at least 7.5 higher education credits or equivalent knowledge acquired in other ways.

About the Employment

An Assistant Professor may be appointed on a permanent basis, but for a period of at least four and at most six years in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100) (HF). At the Faculty of Social Sciences, the length of employment shall be four years. The length of employment is determined before the announcement. The purpose of the employment is to give the teacher the opportunity to develop their independence as a researcher and to qualify scientifically and pedagogically to meet the requirements for eligibility for a position as University Lecturer.

An application for promotion to University Lecturer must be submitted to the faculty no later than nine months before the appointment as Assistant Professor expires.

Other Information

Applicants who lack higher education pedagogy education of at least 7.5 higher education credits and who are not assessed to have acquired equivalent knowledge in other ways must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.

Swedish language proficiency is not a requirement for the appointment, but the applicant must be prepared to take on administrative and pedagogical tasks requiring understanding and use of Swedish within two years.

The length of employment is four years.
