We draw strength from over 50,000 students and employees. Students who give hope for the future. Employees who every day contribute to Linköping University taking on today's challenges. Our core values rest on credibility, trust, and security. By being brave, thinking freely, and doing new things, we create a better future together, through large and small actions. We welcome you to apply for a job with us!

Your responsibilities

You will be part of the research project TEST – Technology Assessment for Sustainable Air Transportation, which aims to develop methods to analyze the interplay between operating costs (Direct Operating Costs, DOC), technology choices, and environmental impact (CO₂ and non-CO₂) within future flight systems. The research focuses on developing models and tools to analyze how new aircraft concepts, propulsion technologies, and operational strategies affect the flight system's performance, costs, and climate impact. The work has a clear systems perspective and includes analyses at the aircraft, mission, and network levels.

The work includes the development of techno-economic models, modeling the relationship between operational decisions and system performance, analyzing how new technologies affect costs and emissions, and developing models for network and fleet analysis.

As a doctoral student, you will focus on your doctoral studies and the research project you are part of. Your work may also include teaching or participating in other departmental assignments, up to 20 percent of full-time.

Your qualifications

You have completed an advanced level degree or completed courses totaling at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 credits are at an advanced level, in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or a related field, or have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way. Your degree must be completed no later than the time the employment decision is made, which means you can apply for the position while completing your studies. It is an advantage if you have completed advanced courses in aerospace engineering and system-of-systems.

Additional merits include:

  • programming (e.g., Python or C#)
  • experience with software for flight system analysis, such as DESMO
  • work with operational models, energy systems, or network analysis.

Very good knowledge of English is required. Knowledge of Swedish is an advantage but not a requirement. Furthermore, you should be able to work independently, be proactive and goal-oriented, and have problem-solving analytical skills. You should also be clear in your communication and have the ability to collaborate with others.

Your workplace

The doctoral position is within the subject of mechanical engineering with a focus on fluid and mechatronic systems and belongs to the Faculty of Science and Engineering. You will belong to the Department of Fluid and Mechatronic Systems, which conducts research and teaching within hydraulics, mechatronics, simulation, and aerospace engineering. A significant part of the research consists of developing methods and simulation techniques to achieve better solutions, as well as verifying and validating results through physical testing. We offer courses in hydraulics, mechatronics, and aircraft design at both undergraduate and advanced levels, primarily within the Civil Engineering program in Mechanical Engineering (300 hp), the Master's program in Mechanical Engineering (120 hp), and Aerospace Engineering (120 hp).

About the employment

Upon commencement of employment, you will be admitted to the doctoral education. Read more about the respective faculty's doctoral education at https://liu.se/forskning/forskarutbildning (https://liu.se/forskning/forskarutbildning).

The employment is fixed-term for two years full-time. Extension of the employment up to 2.5 years occurs based on the extent of teaching and departmental assignments. Under special circumstances, further extension may occur. You are initially employed for one year, after which the employment is renewed based on the achieved study plan.

Commencement date by agreement.

Security clearance may be conducted before a decision on employment is made.
