The Department of Government at Uppsala University is one of the leading departments of political science in Europe. We have approximately 120 employees, including teachers, researchers, doctoral students, and administrative staff. Our activities mainly consist of teaching at undergraduate and advanced levels, as well as doctoral education in political science and development studies. The department also conducts extensive research. Read more about our activities on our website: http://www.statsvet.uu.se/ (http://www.statsvet.uu.se/).

Responsibilities

You will have overall responsibility for research and education at both doctoral and undergraduate levels within the subject area, as well as for the development of these. This includes teaching and supervision at all educational levels. The Faculty aims for 50 percent of working time to be devoted to independent research. There is an opportunity for a paid sabbatical term after a number of years of employment.

You will be involved in the dissemination of research and development work, as well as in the planning, leadership, and participation in research projects, including applications for research funding. Administrative duties, including leadership roles at the departmental and university levels, may also occur.

Qualifications and Requirements

To be eligible for appointment as a professor, you must have demonstrated both scientific and pedagogical competence (Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 4, Section 3). The pedagogical competence, scientific competence, and professional skill must be relevant to the subject content and duties of the position.

Your scientific competence must have been demonstrated through independent research efforts and by maintaining high international quality in your activities. You must show ability to plan, initiate, lead, and develop research, and have obtained research grants competitively.

Your pedagogical competence must be documented through merits in education and teaching. Additionally, you must provide well-documented competence in supervision at the undergraduate, advanced, and especially doctoral levels, and meet the requirements specified in Uppsala University's Employment Regulations (§ 32) and Social Science Faculty's Supplementary Guidelines (Section 2b).

A general requirement is that you have good cooperation skills and otherwise meet the suitability requirements needed to perform the duties well. Documented and good leadership competence is also required.

It is desirable that you are proficient in both Swedish and English for teaching purposes. If you only master one of these languages at the start of employment, you will be given the opportunity to acquire skills in the other within a reasonable time after employment.

When the University appoints new teachers, candidates are selected based on a qualitative overall assessment of competence and skill to ensure they have the best prerequisites to carry out and develop current duties and contribute to the positive development of the activities.

Merits must be documented so that quality and extent can be assessed.

The recruitment group may use interviews, trial lectures, and reference checks. Therefore, you must provide a list of reference persons who can illuminate your professional competence, personal qualities (e.g., cooperation skills, leadership skills), and work methods.

Personal circumstances (parental leave, part-time work due to childcare, trade union duties, military service, etc.) that may be credited during merit evaluation should be stated in connection with the presentation of merits and experience.
