Lund University was founded in 1666 and is consistently ranked among the world's leading universities. There are approximately 46,000 students and 8,500 employees in Lund, Helsingborg, and Malmö. We are united in our strive to understand, explain, and improve our world and the conditions of people.

Specific Description of the Field

The position is located at the Department of Astrophysics, Physics Department, working together with Dr. Oscar Agertz, Dr. Santi Roca Fabrega, and Lund's galaxy formation research group. The project focuses on theoretical predictions for ESA's new satellite ARRAKIHS, which will observe the faint outer parts of galaxies with masses similar to the Milky Way. We are seeking candidates with a background in numerical models for galaxy formation. The appointment is for three years.

Responsibilities

The main responsibility as a postdoctoral researcher is to conduct research. Teaching may be included in the duties, but no more than one-fifth of the working time. As part of the employment, there will be an opportunity to attend three weeks of university pedagogical training.

Qualifications

Eligible for appointment as a postdoctoral researcher is someone who has completed a doctoral degree, or a foreign degree assessed as equivalent to a doctoral degree, within the subject area of the appointment, and which was completed no more than three years prior to the date of the employment decision. If there are special reasons, the doctoral degree may have been completed earlier.

Other Requirements:

  • Very good knowledge of English, both spoken and written.
  • Very good understanding of numerical astrophysics and computational galaxy formation.
  • Experience in advanced analysis of cosmological simulations of galaxy formation.
  • Experience in analyzing data from various cosmological simulation codes.

Assessment Criteria

This is a merit-based appointment primarily focused on research. The position is intended as an initial step in a career, and the assessment of applicants will primarily be based on their scientific merits and potential as researchers.

Special weight will be attached to scientific ability within the subject area.

When appointing a postdoctoral researcher, the following shall form the basis for assessment:

  • Good ability to develop and conduct high-quality research.
  • Pedagogical ability.

Consideration will also be given to good teamwork skills, drive, and independence, as well as how the applicant, through their experience and competence, is assessed to complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department and contribute to its future development.

Terms of Employment

The appointment is fixed-term for 3 years and is full-time. The appointment is fixed-term according to an agreement, "Agreement on fixed-term employment as a postdoctoral researcher," between the social partners dated 2022-02-01 (The Swedish Agency for Government Employers, OFR, and Saco-S).

Application Instructions

The application should be written in English and include:

  • A curriculum vitae/CV including a publication list.
  • A general description of previous research work and future research interests (max three pages).
  • Contact details for at least two references.
  • A copy of the doctoral degree certificate and any other certificates/grades you wish to cite.

We look forward to receiving your application!

At the Faculty of Science, research and education are conducted in astronomy, biology, physics, earth sciences, chemistry, mathematics, medical radiation physics, environmental science, and physical geography. The activities are carried out in the northern university area. The faculty has approximately 1,900 students, 330 doctoral students, and 730 employees.

The Physics Department is one of Lund University's largest departments with approximately 400 employees. The department is shared by the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Engineering (LTH).
