Subject Description

The education in Arabic is offered as standalone courses at all levels: basic level, advanced level, and doctoral level. The basic level consists of four terms, with Term 1 aimed at beginners. During Terms 1 and 2, courses in Standard Arabic and spoken Arabic dialects are taught in parallel, with the former focusing on reading and writing skills and the latter on speaking skills and listening comprehension. During Term 3, these skills are deepened. During Term 4, the student writes an independent project for the bachelor's degree and deepens their theoretical knowledge on a research-based foundation. The subject offers both campus-based and online courses. The subject also provides courses aimed at native Arabic teachers, focusing on didactics, multilingualism, and culture.

Research in Arabic is conducted within linguistics, literary studies, and cultural history. In addition, the subject's research is included in the department's cross-disciplinary research areas.

Job Responsibilities

The responsibilities include teaching Arabic in language, literature, and language skills at the basic level, starting with the beginner course. This also includes the construction, assessment, and correction of examinations.

The education focuses on but is not limited to communicative skills, and therefore the textbook al-Kitaab by Brustad et al. as well as the department's own material are used. During the autumn, teaching takes place on campus, primarily during the day but also in the evenings, mainly in the latter part of the autumn. Teaching in courses aimed at native Arabic teachers may occur. Teaching in cross-disciplinary courses and programs may also become relevant. Teaching is primarily conducted in Swedish, English, and Arabic. Teaching may also take place online and in the evenings.

The majority of the work is to be performed on-site at the department, and the employee is expected to participate actively and constructively in the teaching team's work as well as in the department's development and working environment activities, which includes participation in workplace meetings and other internal meetings and conferences.

The employment may also include other tasks, such as administrative duties and development work.

The work within the subject is conducted in a teaching team, and the person appointed is expected to contribute constructively in a collegial spirit, both to the subject and to the entire department.

Qualifications

Qualifications for employment as a teacher are specified in Chapter 4, Sections 3–4 of the Higher Education Ordinance (does not apply to Assistant Professor) as well as Gothenburg University's own employment regulations.

Eligible for employment as a University Lecturer in Arabic is someone who has demonstrated pedagogical skill and has completed a doctoral degree in Arabic or another subject that the recruiting department deems relevant, or who has equivalent scientific competence.

Good knowledge of and ability to teach in English and Arabic is a requirement from the start of the employment. Good knowledge of and ability to teach in Swedish is meritorious.
