Special Education Teacher for Skolslussen – Support and Development for Students in Need
Are you passionate about working with and supporting students who need extensive assistance to succeed in school, and are you skilled at building trust and confidence? Then this might be the job for you!
About Skolslussen
Skolslussen is part of the Development Unit and serves as a central resource for the municipal primary schools (Grades F-9) in Eskilstuna Municipality. We operate consultation teams and an emergency school. We are a cross-professional team consisting of special needs and speech therapists, special education teachers, special needs pedagogues, teachers, counselors, and teaching assistants. We possess broad competence and extensive experience working with students facing complex learning difficulties. Our team is also trained as coaches focused on school activities.
Our mission is to support and develop Eskilstuna's municipal primary schools with special pedagogical and psychosocial competence for students with challenging and extensive behavioral issues. Our goal is to find effective forms for sustainable schooling for this target group, adapted to each student's prerequisites. As a team, we work at the organizational, group, and individual levels with promotional, preventive, and remedial measures. Skolslussen always operates from a relational approach.
1 Position
Responsibilities
At Skolslussen, you will be part of a unit with 8 other colleagues. As a special education teacher, you will investigate and subject-assess students who, for a short period, need placement in our small-scale environment. You will meet with a small group of students where the need is often one-to-one support during assessment, with the aim of recommending measures within special support or other school placements. We are responsible for placements in our municipality-wide special teaching groups.
Your focus will be on theoretical subjects. Primarily mathematics and English, but teaching in other subjects may occur depending on the student's needs. Additionally, you will work in schools providing consultative support, for example through observations, to assist schools and propose measures to increase study well-being and improve the learning situation. Regardless of the intervention, this is always done in close collaboration with the school, other external actors, and guardians.
Other tasks include individual conversations with students and parents, as well as supporting the coordination of networks around the student. Our students often have extensive norm-breaking behavioral issues, and you must be prepared to handle acute and challenging situations.
We offer collegial learning, and you will participate in several competence-building initiatives and training programs.
Note: The text initially mentions a vacation employment, but later specifies permanent employment. Please contact the recruitment unit for clarification regarding the employment type.
Qualifications
We place great emphasis on personal qualities. The most important aspect is your approach to people. You must be able to create trust and confidence in the students. Being sensitive, respectful, and empathetic are key traits, while also being clear and direct. You need to be unpretentious, flexible, and able to adapt quickly, as our operations often require this. No day is the same as the last, and it is important that you thrive in and can handle an unpredictable daily routine. We want to build a team that is sensitive to each other's and the students' needs and sees the potential in every student.
Since this is a job that is easy to become emotionally invested in, you must also have a good ability to set personal boundaries, manage internal stress, and not take work home with you. Besides a strong commitment, we want you to have drive and be development-oriented.
Fundamentally, you are a licensed teacher with eligibility to teach mathematics and have completed a special education teacher program, along with a B-driver's license. You have at least three years of experience teaching in primary school and working with children and young people with disabilities and behavioral issues.
If you also have training in various assessment tools, experience in subject-assessing students, and training in MI (Motivational Interviewing) and TMO (Teaching Mathematically Oriented), this is considered a major plus. Eligibility to teach English is an advantage.
Does this sound interesting? You are warmly welcome to a job where you have the opportunity to contribute to a future in Eskilstuna where more people succeed!
